Portland Pilots at Gonzaga Bulldogs
SPOKANE, Wash. (Interstat) — A pivotal West Coast Conference women’s basketball clash is set for Saturday when the Portland Pilots visit the Gonzaga Bulldogs at McCarthey Athletic Center.
Portland (9-7) enters on a two-game winning streak, including a dominant 74-53 victory over Pacific last Sunday. The Pilots have shown resilience, going 4-2 in their last six outings. Their success hinges heavily on forward Dyani Ananiev, who is coming off a standout performance with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists against Pacific. Over her last five games, Ananiev is averaging 13.2 points and 5.0 rebounds.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs (11-6) look to rebound at home after a narrow 77-73 road loss to Santa Clara. That defeat snapped a five-game winning streak for the Bulldogs, who are 8-2 at home this season. They are led by forward Lauren Whittaker, who posted a massive 21-point, 13-rebound double-double in the loss. Whittaker has been a consistent force, scoring in double figures in 12 consecutive games and averaging 19.6 points over her last seven.
This matchup features contrasting styles. Portland relies on a balanced attack, with Julia Dalan providing a strong interior presence alongside Ananiev. Gonzaga’s offense flows through Whittaker, but gets key contributions from guards like Zeryhia Aokuso.
Historically, Gonzaga has dominated the series, but Portland’s recent form suggests a competitive contest. The Pilots will need to contain Whittaker and control the glass to challenge on the road. For Gonzaga, protecting home court is paramount as both teams jockey for position in the WCC standings.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. PST on Saturday, Jan. 10.
Up Next: Portland visits Santa Clara on Thursday, Jan. 15. Gonzaga hosts San Francisco on the same date.
