Owls Dominate Second Quarter, Cruise Past Charlotte

HOUSTON (Interstat) — The Rice Owls used a dominant second quarter to seize control and never looked back, defeating the Charlotte 49ers 84-59 in an American Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Tudor Fieldhouse.

Rice, improving to 13-3 overall, outscored Charlotte 26-11 in the pivotal second period, turning a narrow 17-13 lead after one quarter into a commanding 39-28 halftime advantage. The Owls’ offensive explosion in that frame, fueled by efficient shooting and forced turnovers, proved to be the decisive stretch of the contest. Charlotte, which fell to .500 at 8-8, could not mount a sustained challenge after halftime as Rice maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the second quarter. Leading 23-21, Rice ignited a 16-2 run over a five-minute span to break the game open. The surge was characterized by a stifling defensive effort and balanced scoring. Louann Battiston, the sophomore guard from Belgium, drilled a three-pointer, Victoria Flores converted a pair of free throws, and Shelby Hayes capitalized on an offensive rebound for a putback layup. The run was capped by another Battiston three-pointer, assisted by Hailey Adams, pushing the Rice lead to 39-23. Charlotte managed only a single field goal during this stretch, a layup from Asianae Nicholson, as the Owls built a lead that would not dip below 11 points for the remainder of the game.

Rice’s victory was a product of superior efficiency and execution in key areas. The Owls scored 84 points on 72 possessions, an offensive rating of 115.9, while Charlotte managed just 59 points on 71 possessions for a rating of 83.0. Rice shot 43.5% from the field and was a sharp 17 of 20 from the free-throw line. The Owls also dominated inside, outscoring Charlotte 36-20 in the paint, and converted 17 points off 14 Charlotte turnovers.

Charlotte was led by Princess Anderson, who scored a game-high 26 points in 29 minutes. The guard from Beaumont, Texas, was the primary offensive threat for the 49ers, but received limited support. Zoe Best added seven points, three assists and two blocks.

Rice showcased a more diversified and potent attack. Victoria Flores, a guard from Dallas, and Louann Battiston each poured in 20 points. Battiston also added an assist and a block in 26 minutes. Shelby Hayes, a 6-foot-2 forward from Cedar Park, Texas, recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high three assists, while also contributing significantly on the boards. The Owls’ depth was evident as Hailey Adams tallied nine points and four assists, and Dominique Ennis and Aniah Alexis combined for 15 points.

The Owls’ defense was particularly effective in containing Charlotte beyond Anderson. The 49ers shot just 34.4% from the field and committed 14 turnovers, which Rice consistently turned into transition opportunities. Despite Charlotte holding a slight edge in offensive rebounds, 14-16, and blocks, 5-3, they could not overcome their shooting struggles and Rice’s sustained offensive pressure.

The game drew an attendance of 619 to Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice entered as a heavy favorite according to predictive metrics, with a projected win probability exceeding 90 percent, and played to that expectation with a comprehensive performance. Charlotte, coming off a home win over UAB, saw its two-game conference winning streak snapped.

Rice will look to continue its strong conference start when it hosts UAB on Jan. 14. Charlotte aims to rebound on the road at Texas-San Antonio on Jan. 10.
