Montana State at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Montana State Bobcats used a dominant first half and a relentless defensive effort to secure an 86-72 road victory over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday night at Chiles Center.

The Bobcats improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Pilots evened their record at 1-1.

Montana State seized control of the game from the opening tip, erupting for 27 points in the first quarter. Their aggressive defense set the tone, forcing a flurry of early Portland turnovers that fueled their transition offense. The Bobcats extended their lead by outscoring the Pilots 20-12 in the second quarter, taking a commanding 47-34 advantage into halftime.

Portland, which was projected as a heavy favorite by statistical models, struggled to find consistent offense against the Bobcats’ pressure. The Pilots shot just 23 of 56 from the floor for the game, a 41.1 percent clip, and were hampered by 30 total turnovers. Montana State converted those miscues into 17 steals and numerous easy scoring opportunities.

The Bobcats’ offense was efficient, scoring 86 points on 86 possessions for an offensive rating of 100.3. They shot 53.6 percent from the field, making 30 of 56 attempts. While they attempted only 10 three-pointers, making two, they found consistent success inside and capitalized at the free-throw line, making 24 of 31 attempts.

Taylee Chirrick, a 5-foot-11 guard from Roberts, Montana, led all scorers with 23 points for Montana State. She added seven assists and was a catalyst for the Bobcats’ attack. Addison Harris, a 6-1 forward from Camas, Washington, contributed 18 points, while Brooke Fatupaito just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Portland was led by Rhyan Mogel of Happy Valley, Oregon, who scored 17 points. Florence Dallow, a 6-2 forward from Auckland, New Zealand, added 16 points for the Pilots. Dyani Ananiev of Melbourne, Australia, chipped in 12 points.

Despite being outscored 25-22 in a high-scoring fourth quarter, Montana State’s lead never felt threatened as they maintained a double-digit cushion throughout the second half. The Bobcats’ ball movement was superior, finishing with 17 assists to Portland’s 11, and their defensive intensity never wavered in front of an announced crowd of 851.

The game was a stark contrast to each team’s season opener, where both had posted lopsided victories over lower-division opponents. Montana State will look to continue its early momentum, while Portland will aim to regroup after a disappointing home opener.
