Lady Buccaneers Hold Off Bulldogs for Southern Conference Win
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a Southern Conference defensive struggle defined by missed shots and interior dominance, the East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers held off a late Samford rally to secure a 53-44 victory in women’s basketball Friday afternoon at ETSU Athletic Center.
The Lady Buccaneers (10-11, 3-3) never trailed, building a commanding lead through three quarters before withstanding a 22-point fourth-quarter surge from the visiting Bulldogs (8-15, 1-5). The win was anchored by a stifling defensive effort and a decisive 30-12 advantage in points in the paint.
East Tennessee State set the tone early, holding Samford to just 14 first-half points on a dismal collective shooting performance. The Bulldogs managed only eight points in the opening quarter and six in the second, entering halftime facing a 23-14 deficit. The Lady Buccaneers’ length and rim protection, led by Meghan Downing’s four blocks, consistently disrupted Samford’s offensive flow, forcing difficult perimeter attempts.
Samford’s offensive woes persisted into the third quarter, which ended with East Tennessee State extending its lead to 36-22. The Bulldogs shot below 30 percent from the floor for the game and connected on just a handful of three-point attempts, unable to find any consistent rhythm against the active ETSU defense.
The most important part of the game, however, was Samford’s frantic fourth-quarter comeback attempt that ultimately fell short. Trailing by as many as 16 points, the Bulldogs finally found their offensive spark behind guards Frances Morris and Sierra Godbolt. Morris, a sophomore from Montgomery, Alabama, scored 14 of her team-high 16 points in the final period, including a pair of three-pointers that ignited the run. Godbolt added 11 points, with several key baskets in the closing minutes.
Samford’s full-court pressure forced several late turnovers, whittling the lead down to six points on multiple occasions. A three-pointer by Kaylee Yarbrough made it 49-45 with just over a minute remaining, applying significant pressure to the home team.
East Tennessee State’s composure at the free-throw line in the final 25 seconds sealed the victory. Guard Anala Nelson, who led all scorers with 16 points, calmly sank four consecutive free throws to push the lead back to eight and extinguish Samford’s hopes. Nelson, a Columbia, South Carolina native, was pivotal throughout, adding key rebounds and defensive plays.
Downing, a 6-foot-2 post player from New Madison, Ohio, provided a crucial interior presence for ETSU with 12 points, four blocks, and several offensive rebounds that extended possessions. Daniela López of Barcelona, Spain, contributed seven points, five rebounds, and two blocks in 35 minutes of action.
For Samford, Morris finished with 16 points in 27 minutes. Godbolt, from Orlando, Florida, added 11 points and three steals. Martha Bishop of Spartanburg, South Carolina, provided eight points and solid interior defense.
The Lady Buccaneers’ ability to dominate the paint proved to be the fundamental difference. They out-rebounded Samford and converted numerous second-chance opportunities, while Samford’s 17 points off turnovers were not enough to overcome their shooting struggles.
East Tennessee State moves to .500 in conference play with the win, while Samford drops its fourth straight Southern Conference contest. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Birmingham, Alabama, on Feb. 28.
Samford travels to face Chattanooga on Sunday, while East Tennessee State hosts Mercer the same day.
