Bison Dominate Pioneers in Summit League Showcase
FARGO, N.D. (Interstat) — The North Dakota State Bison delivered a commanding performance, overwhelming the Denver Pioneers 95-55 in a Summit League women’s basketball game Thursday night at Scheels Center.
From the opening tip, the Bison established a dominant tone, leveraging a stifling defense and a remarkably efficient offense to build an insurmountable lead by halftime. The victory improved North Dakota State’s record to 17-2 overall and solidified its position atop the conference, while Denver fell to 9-12.
The most critical phase of the contest was a devastating second-quarter surge by the Bison that transformed a competitive game into a rout. Leading 20-11 after the first period, North Dakota State erupted for 28 points in the second quarter while holding Denver to just seven. This 28-7 frame, a 21-point differential, stretched a nine-point lead to a 48-18 halftime advantage and effectively decided the outcome.
The Bison’s offensive execution during this stretch and throughout the game was nearly flawless. They shot 61.7% from the field, making 37 of 60 attempts, and connected on 11 of 19 three-pointers for a 57.9% clip. Their offensive rating of 144.8 points per 100 possessions underscored an elite level of efficiency. Defensively, they forced 15 Denver turnovers, converting them into easy scoring opportunities, and recorded 11 steals and four blocked shots.
Marisa Frost led all scorers with 22 points for North Dakota State, showcasing her versatility with drives to the basket and perimeter shooting. Avery Koenen added 17 points, along with two assists and two blocks, controlling the paint at both ends. The Bison’s depth was on full display as Abby Krzewinski scored 12 points, Karrington Asp contributed 12 points and a block, and Jocelyn Schiller orchestrated the offense with 11 points and four assists.
Denver, which managed only 19 field goals on 44 attempts, was led by Coryn Watts’s 19 points. Jocelyn Medina added 13 points for the Pioneers, who struggled to find any consistent rhythm against the Bison’s pressure. Denver’s five assists against 15 turnovers highlighted their difficulties in generating clean offensive sets.
The game was a stark reversal from the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 3, which North Dakota State won 81-44. The Bison have now won 10 of their last 11 games, their only loss in that span coming on the road against South Dakota State. Denver, which had won two of its last three coming into the game, saw its offensive struggles return against the league’s top defensive unit.
North Dakota State’s performance validated its status as the Summit League favorite, demonstrating a potent combination of offensive firepower and defensive intensity that few opponents have been able to counter this season. The Bison will look to continue their momentum when they host Oral Roberts on Saturday. Denver, seeking to regroup, travels to face North Dakota on Saturday.
