Sun Devils Outlast Wildcats in Defensive Big 12 Clash

TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a rugged, defensive-minded contest defined by turnovers and free throws, the Arizona State Sun Devils used a decisive fourth-quarter push to fend off the Arizona Wildcats 68-61 in a Big 12 women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

Arizona State, improving to 18-4 overall, maintained control of the game by converting Arizona’s mistakes into points and capitalizing at the foul line. The Sun Devils scored 22 points off 19 Wildcats turnovers and made 19 of 21 free throws, including several clutch attempts in the final minutes. Arizona fell to 10-10.

The game’s pivotal sequence arrived late in the fourth quarter with Arizona State clinging to a 60-58 lead. After Arizona’ Kamryn Kitchen cut the deficit to two with a layup, the Sun Devils responded with a critical 6-0 run over the next 90 seconds. The surge was fueled by interior defense and composure at the stripe. Heloisa Carrera scored inside off an assist from McKinna Brackens, and after an Arizona turnover, Gabby Elliott drew a foul and sank two free throws. Brackens then added two more free throws, extending the lead to 66-58 with 1:52 remaining, a margin the Wildcats could not overcome.

Arizona, which had mounted a spirited second-half comeback, was led by the dynamic play of guard Noelani Cornfield. The sophomore from Gowanda, New York, played 40 minutes and scored a team-high 19 points while dishing out six assists. Her driving layups and playmaking fueled a 23-point third quarter that brought the Wildcats back from a 33-26 halftime deficit to briefly tie the game. Kamryn Kitchen added 14 points for Arizona.

However, the Wildcats’ offensive struggles proved too significant to overcome. They shot just 4 of 14 from three-point range and committed those 19 turnovers against an active Sun Devils defense that recorded 11 steals. Arizona also managed only six assists on 22 made field goals, indicative of a stagnant offense for long stretches.

Arizona State was propelled by the scoring of Gabby Elliott. The Detroit native poured in a game-high 22 points, with 12 coming in the fourth quarter, many from the free-throw line where she was a perfect 8-for-8. She also grabbed six defensive rebounds. Brackens, a forward from Fairfield, Texas, provided a crucial all-around performance with 13 points, several key rebounds, and disruptive defense. Carrera, the 6-foot-2 post from Sao Paulo, Brazil, anchored the paint with 12 points, three blocks, and a game-high four offensive rebounds.

The Sun Devils built their early lead by dominating the first half defensively. Arizona was held to 26 points on 10-of-28 shooting and turned the ball over 12 times before the break. While Arizona State’s shooting was also inefficient, their ability to get to the line — making 9 of 10 first-half free throws — and score off turnovers gave them a cushion.

Arizona’s third-quarter rally, spearheaded by Cornfield and Kitchen, erased that cushion and set up a tense final period. The Wildcats tied the game at 41 and again at 45, but could never seize the lead. Each time, Arizona State answered, usually with a basket in the paint or a trip to the foul line.

The victory extends Arizona State’s strong start to conference play and solidifies its position in the upper tier of the Big 12. For Arizona, the loss continues a pattern of narrow defeats in league action, with several recent games decided by single digits. The intrastate rivals will meet again in Tucson on February 14.

The announced attendance at Wells Fargo Arena was 6,121.
