Preview: Washington at Maryland in Key Big Ten Clash

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — A pivotal Big Ten women’s basketball matchup featuring two ranked teams with nearly identical records will tip off Wednesday night when the Washington Huskies visit the Maryland Terrapins at the Xfinity Center.

Both teams enter with strong momentum, each having won four of their last five games. Washington (16-4, 6-3 Big Ten) is coming off a dominant 76-48 road win at Rutgers on Monday. Maryland (17-4, 7-3) last played on Jan. 22, suffering an 85-78 overtime home loss to Iowa.

The Huskies are led by forward Brynn McGaughy, who has been a consistent scoring force. She posted 17 points in just 24 minutes against Rutgers and has averaged 13.4 points over her last five contests. She is complemented by guards Sayvia Sellers and Avery Howell, who combined for 27 points in the Rutgers victory.

Maryland will counter with its own standout forward, Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu. She scored a season-high 18 points in the overtime battle with Iowa. Her production can be volatile, however, as she was held to just two points in a loss to UCLA on Jan. 18.

This game represents a critical test for both squads in a deep Big Ten conference. Washington’s recent success has been built on defense, holding opponents to an average of 54.2 points during its current three-game win streak. Maryland boasts one of the nation’s most potent offenses but has shown vulnerability against top-tier competition, with two of its four losses coming in its last four games.

The Terrapins will have the benefit of extra rest and a home-court advantage, where they are 10-2 this season. The Huskies, however, have proven resilient on the road, with key conference wins at Indiana and Purdue earlier this month.

Wednesday’s winner will secure a valuable Quad 1 victory and solidify its position near the top of the conference standings as the regular season enters its final month. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST.
