Titans Dominate Mustangs in Big West Conference Matchup

FULLERTON, Calif. (Interstat) — The Cal State Fullerton Titans seized control from the opening tip and never relented, cruising to a 73-41 victory over the Cal Poly Mustangs in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Titan Gymnasium.

The outcome was rarely in doubt as the Titans built a 23-6 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 44-9 by halftime, capitalizing on a historically poor offensive half by the visiting Mustangs. Cal Poly’s nine first-half points, which included a mere three in the second quarter, underscored a struggle for offensive rhythm that lasted the entire afternoon.

Cal State Fullerton improved to 11-9 overall and strengthened its position in the conference standings. Cal Poly fell to 3-16, continuing a difficult season.

The most decisive phase of the game was unquestionably the first quarter, where Fullerton established a template for dominance. The Titans opened with a 17-0 run before Cal Poly registered its first field goal, a jumper by Charish Thompson with 4:38 remaining in the period. Fullerton’s defensive pressure was immediate and disruptive, forcing eight Mustang turnovers in the quarter which they converted into easy scoring opportunities.

Talia Maxwell, the Titans’ 6-foot-3 center from Fresno, was instrumental in the early onslaught. She scored the game’s first three points on a layup and free throw, blocked two shots, and grabbed three rebounds in the opening minutes, setting a physical tone Cal Poly could not match. Backcourt pressure from Dylan Swindle and Maddy Tauro fueled the transition game, with Swindle hitting a three-pointer and Tauro connecting on consecutive jumpers during the pivotal opening run.

Cal Poly’s offensive woes were stark. The Mustangs shot just 13 of 49 from the field for the game, a frigid 26.5 percent, and made only 2 of 17 from three-point range. They committed 22 turnovers, which Fullerton translated into 30 points. Conversely, the Titans scored 40 points in the paint and outrebounded Cal Poly 17-6 on the offensive glass, leading to 17 second-chance points.

Maxwell finished with a game-high 17 points, four blocks and three steals in 28 minutes. Tauro added 12 points, while Kya Pearson orchestrated the offense with 10 points and six assists. Jana Falsdottir and Dylan Swindle each contributed eight points.

For Cal Poly, Thompson led the way with 12 points and two blocks. Katie Peiffer scored nine points, and Avery Knapp added eight. The Mustangs showed slightly more life after halftime, scoring 16 points in each of the third and fourth quarters, but the deficit was far too large to overcome.

The Titans’ offensive rating of 90.2 points per 100 possessions, compared to Cal Poly’s 55.7, highlighted the efficiency gap. Fullerton also shared the ball effectively, tallying 14 assists to Cal Poly’s 10, and recorded 14 steals.

The game was a reversal of the teams’ first meeting on Dec. 4, which Fullerton also won decisively, 96-64. The Titans have now won five of their last seven games.

Cal State Fullerton next hosts UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 31. Cal Poly returns home to face Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 29.
