Norfolk State Women Roll Past Morgan State in MEAC Matchup

NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — The Norfolk State Spartans used a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from the Morgan State Bears and secure a 78-52 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Echols Hall.

A tightly contested first quarter, which ended with Norfolk State holding a slim 16-15 lead, gave way to a decisive stretch that defined the contest. The Spartans outscored the Bears 21-9 in the second period, transforming a one-point game into a 37-24 halftime advantage. That 13-point swing established a cushion that Morgan State, struggling offensively throughout the night, could never threaten.

The Spartans’ separation was built on a combination of stifling defense and efficient scoring runs. They forced 17 Morgan State turnovers, converting them into 12 steals and numerous transition opportunities. Offensively, Norfolk State found its rhythm after the first quarter, shooting 45.2% from the field for the game while holding the Bears to a frigid 34.4%. The three-point line told a similar story, with Norfolk State hitting 7 of 23 attempts compared to Morgan State’s 2-of-14 performance.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably Norfolk State’s second-quarter blitz. After Morgan State’s Jael Butler opened the period with a layup to cut the deficit to 16-18, the Spartans unleashed a 19-4 run over the next seven minutes. The run was fueled by defensive pressure and balanced scoring. Jasha Clinton and Da’Brya Clark hit three-pointers, Clinton added a driving layup, and Anjanae Richardson and LeAire Nicks contributed inside scores. During this stretch, Morgan State’s offense stagnated, plagued by turnovers and missed shots, managing only a Gabrielle Johnson layup and a Michaela Bogans free throw. By the time Richardson scored on a layup with 25 seconds left in the half, the Spartans had built a 37-22 lead, effectively putting the game out of reach before the intermission.

Norfolk State guard Jasha Clinton, a Virginia Beach native, led all scorers with 18 points, adding four assists in 34 minutes. She was instrumental in the second-quarter run, hitting a three-pointer and a jumper during the critical span. Forward Cire Worley of Philadelphia provided 16 points, while fellow guard Anjanae Richardson, from Portsmouth, Virginia, filled the stat sheet with 16 points, four assists, a block and three steals in 36 minutes.

For Morgan State, the lone bright spot was the interior play of center Jael Butler. The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Gilroy, California, scored a team-high 18 points and blocked two shots in just 20 minutes of action. Her efficiency inside contrasted with her team’s overall struggles, but the Bears could not consistently feed her the ball against the Spartans’ active defense.

Morgan State guard Mihjae Hayes, a Philadelphia native, dished out a game-high six assists, but the Bears’ offense never found a sustainable flow. They finished with an offensive rating of just 70.5 points per 100 possessions, a stark contrast to Norfolk State’s mark of 103.2.

With the win, Norfolk State improved to 9-11 overall and evened its MEAC record. The Spartans have now won three of their last four conference games. Morgan State fell to 3-18 overall, continuing a difficult season. The Bears have lost eight of their last ten games.

An announced crowd of 752 at Echols Hall watched the Spartans control the glass to a 42-34 rebounding edge and outscore Morgan State 13-8 from the free-throw line. Norfolk State also shared the ball more effectively, recording 12 assists on 29 made field goals.

The game was a showcase of Norfolk State’s defensive intensity and ability to capitalize on opponent mistakes, a formula that proved devastating during the game-turning second quarter. Morgan State, which entered the game as a significant underdog according to predictive metrics, could not muster the offensive firepower to keep pace once the Spartans shifted gears.

Norfolk State looks to continue its positive conference momentum when it hosts Coppin State on Saturday. Morgan State will aim to regroup quickly as it travels to face Howard, also on Saturday.
