Austin Peay Women Rally Past Florida Gulf Coast for Road Win
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — In a gritty, defensive-minded contest defined by second-chance opportunities and critical free throws, the Austin Peay Governors avenged a loss from two weeks prior by holding off the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 74-66 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Thursday night at Alico Arena.
Kyra Perkins, a 5-foot-10 guard from Morrison, Tennessee, provided the decisive offensive spark off the bench, scoring a game-high 19 points in just 24 minutes to lead the Governors. Her performance, which included a crucial three-point play and several key drives in the second half, helped Austin Peay improve to 12-5 overall. Florida Gulf Coast, despite a strong 18-point effort from Eve Alexander of Opelousas, Louisiana, fell to an even 9-9.
The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded late in the fourth quarter with Austin Peay protecting a narrow lead. After a technical foul assessed to the Governors’ bench, Florida Gulf Coast’s Nay Staton sank two free throws to cut the deficit to 58-56 with 6:44 remaining. The Eagles had momentum and a chance to tie or take the lead on the ensuing possession.
Instead, the Governors’ defense stiffened. Perkins answered with a driving layup on the other end, and after a defensive stop, Anovia Sheals of Daytona Beach, Florida, added another basket inside to push the lead back to six. Florida Gulf Coast would get no closer than four points the rest of the way, as Austin Peay closed the game by making 10 of 12 free throws in the final quarter.
The contest was a stark reversal of efficiency from the teams’ meeting on Jan. 8, a 58-54 Eagles victory. This time, Austin Peay’s offense proved more potent, scoring 74 points on 70 possessions for an offensive rating of 105.6, while Florida Gulf Coast managed 66 points on 68 possessions for a 97.5 rating. The Governors overcame poor three-point shooting by dominating the interior, outscoring the Eagles 42-28 in the paint and securing 11 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points.
Austin Peay set an early tone, leading 16-13 after a first quarter where both teams combined for 15 turnovers. The Governors extended their lead to 37-35 at halftime, thanks to a balanced attack and 21-point second quarter. Florida Gulf Coast kept pace behind Alexander and Staton, who finished with 15 points, but could never string together enough stops to overtake the visitors.
The third quarter saw Austin Peay maintain its edge, taking a 57-48 lead into the final period. The Eagles mounted their last serious challenge with a 10-2 run early in the fourth, capped by Staton’s three-pointer that made it 53-50, but Perkins and Sheals consistently had answers for the Governors. Sheals finished with 14 points and a team-high 30 minutes.
Jim’Miyah Branton of Miami provided steady play for Austin Peay, contributing 10 points and a game-high five assists. For Florida Gulf Coast, Sinai Douglas of Toledo, Ohio, added 12 points, while Jordan Campbell of Purcellville, Virginia, dished out six assists.
Despite both teams committing 18 turnovers and recording identical totals in assists, steals, and blocks, Austin Peay’s advantages in field goal percentage and rebounding proved decisive. The Governors shot 50.9% from the floor, while holding the Eagles to 48.8%. From the free-throw line, Austin Peay was an efficient 14 of 17, whereas Florida Gulf Coast struggled, making only 21 of 31 attempts.
The win gives Austin Peay momentum heading into a road game at Stetson on Saturday. Florida Gulf Coast will look to rebound at home against Lipscomb the same day. An announced crowd of 1,427 watched the Governors hand the Eagles a rare home-court defeat in a series that has seen the last two meetings decided by a total of 10 points.
