Merrimack at Saint Peter`s
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Interstat) — The Merrimack Warriors look to complete a regular-season sweep and climb back to .500 when they visit the Saint Peter’s Peacocks in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball matchup Thursday night at Yanitelli Center.
Merrimack (8-9, 5-3 MAAC) defeated Saint Peter’s 67-59 at home on Jan. 3, powered by a dominant 21-point, 17-rebound, five-assist performance from standout forward Madison Roman. The Warriors have since gone 3-2, including a 61-75 home loss to Quinnipiac on Monday. Roman posted a double-double in that defeat with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Roman has been a consistent force for Merrimack, averaging a double-double over her last seven games. Her recent stretch includes a 21-point, six-assist outing in a win at Siena and a 20-point, 14-rebound performance against Mount Saint Mary’s.
Saint Peter’s (4-14, 2-5) is coming off one of its best results of the season, a 63-57 road victory at Iona on Monday. Guard Reilly Sunday led the way with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists, a significant bounce-back after being limited in several prior contests. The Peacocks’ offense has struggled for consistency, however, having been held under 55 points in eight of their last ten games.
The Warriors have found recent success with a more potent offense, scoring 72 points or more in three of their last six games after failing to reach 70 in their first 11 contests. Joi Williams, who scored 19 against Quinnipiac, provides a secondary scoring option alongside Roman.
For Saint Peter’s, containing Roman will be paramount after her historic performance in the first meeting. The Peacocks will need Sunday to build on her Iona performance and for contributions from players like Louella Allana, who had seven points, five rebounds and five assists in the win.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST. Merrimack visits Mount Saint Mary’s on Saturday, while Saint Peter’s hosts Rider the same day.
