Top-Ranked Gamecocks Face Tough Road Test at Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — The South Carolina Gamecocks, boasting the nation’s most dominant record, face a challenging non-conference road test against the Oklahoma Sooners on Thursday night at Lloyd Noble Center.

South Carolina (19-1), representing the Southeastern Conference in this matchup, has won 10 straight games since its only loss in late November. The Gamecocks are coming off a 90-48 rout of Coppin State on Sunday, where Joyce Edwards scored 26 points in just 25 minutes. Edwards, a sophomore forward, has been a consistent force, averaging 18.1 points and 5.0 rebounds over her last seven games, including a 25-point, 10-rebound double-double at Florida on Jan. 4.

The Sooners (14-4), however, present a significant step up in competition and are seeking a statement victory after dropping three of their last five games. Oklahoma fell 91-72 to LSU at home on Sunday despite a 21-point effort from guard Payton Verhulst. The Louisville transfer has been a bright spot, averaging 11.4 points this season and scoring in double figures in four of her last six outings.

South Carolina’s defense has been stifling, holding opponents to an average of 48.2 points during its winning streak. Offensively, the Gamecocks have multiple weapons; in the win over Coppin State, Ta’Niya Latson added 15 points and five assists, while Tessa Johnson contributed 17 points.

Oklahoma will counter with a high-powered offense that averages 84.2 points per game. Alongside Verhulst, forward Raegan Beers provides an interior presence, posting a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) against LSU.

This contest pits South Carolina’s elite defense against Oklahoma’s potent, up-tempo attack. For the Sooners, defending their home court against the nation’s top team could redefine their season. For the Gamecocks, navigating a hostile environment against a talented offensive squad is a final hurdle before resuming SEC play.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Thursday. South Carolina returns to conference action Sunday against Vanderbilt, while Oklahoma travels to Auburn on Sunday.
