Clemson at Virginia Tech
BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Two of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s hottest teams will meet Thursday when the Virginia Tech Hokies host the Clemson Lady Tigers in a key women’s basketball matchup at Cassell Coliseum.
The Hokies (14-5, 4-2 ACC) have won three straight conference games by an average of 27.3 points, most recently routing SMU 79-42 on Jan. 15. Kilah Freelon led that effort with 18 points and two blocks, continuing a strong stretch for the forward. She is averaging 12.0 points and 5.2 rebounds over her last five contests.
Clemson (13-6, 3-3) arrives after a hard-fought 78-71 overtime victory over Wake Forest on Sunday. The Lady Tigers have won three of their last four, with guard Mia Moore serving as the catalyst. Moore logged 41 minutes against the Demon Deacons, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Over her last seven games, she has averaged 10.6 points and 5.7 assists, demonstrating her all-around playmaking.
Virginia Tech’s defense has been stifling during its win streak, holding opponents to just 51.7 points per game. That unit will be tested by a balanced Clemson attack that saw Rachael Rose score 20 points and Demeara Hinds add 10 points and nine rebounds alongside Moore in the overtime win.
The Hokies hold a narrow edge in the all-time series, 17-16, but Clemson won last season’s meeting 72-61 in South Carolina. Both teams are jockeying for position in a deep ACC, making this a critical mid-season contest. Virginia Tech currently sits a half-game ahead of Clemson in the conference standings.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Jan. 22. Virginia Tech will visit Wake Forest on Sunday, while Clemson travels to face Notre Dame on Jan. 25.
