Denver Rallies Past UMKC in Summit League Women’s Basketball
DENVER (Interstat) — In a game defined by a disastrous start and a methodical comeback, the Denver Pioneers overcame a 16-point first-quarter deficit to defeat the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos 64-54 in a Summit League women’s basketball contest Wednesday night at Magness Arena.
The Kangaroos (6-14, 2-3 Summit) dominated the opening period, holding Denver to just six points while building a 16-6 lead. Missouri-Kansas City’s defense was stifling early, forcing the Pioneers into missed shots and turnovers. Jamyah Winter’s 3-pointer just 15 seconds into the game set the tone, and the Roos closed the quarter on a 10-2 run, capped by a Tierra Trotter layup with just over a minute remaining.
The most important part of the game, however, was Denver’s immediate and sustained response. The Pioneers (8-11, 2-3) began to chip away in the second quarter, outscoring UMKC 19-10 to cut the halftime deficit to just one point at 26-25. The turnaround was fueled by guard Coryn Watts, who began to find her rhythm. After being held scoreless in the first quarter, the Aurora, Colorado, native ignited the Denver offense.
Watts finished with a game-high 21 points and eight assists, orchestrating the Pioneer attack. Her backcourt mate, Jocelyn Medina, provided crucial support with 13 points and four assists. The duo’s penetration and playmaking opened up the floor, allowing Denver to shoot 26 of 65 from the field compared to UMKC’s 21 of 53.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with Denver finally seizing the lead for good on a Laia Monclova layup assisted by Watts midway through the period. Monclova, from Mallorca, Spain, posted 13 points and was a force defensively. The Pioneers took a 42-41 edge into the final quarter.
Denver then put the game away with a strong fourth quarter, outscoring the Kangaroos 22-13. A 7-0 run early in the period, featuring a Monclova 3-pointer and a Brooke Murrell layup, extended the lead to 51-44. UMKC could not mount a counter-run, hampered by 22 turnovers, which Denver converted into 19 points. The Pioneers committed 16 turnovers but were more efficient with their possessions, posting an offensive rating of 82.9 points per 100 possessions against UMKC’s 70.5.
Missouri-Kansas City was led by Emani Bennett’s 14 points. Kelby Bannerman of Hampshire, Illinois, provided a strong interior presence with 10 points and four blocked shots, while Zaire Harrell added 10 points. The Kangaroos’ early advantage was erased by their struggles at the free-throw line, where they shot just 9 of 18, and an offense that went cold after the first quarter.
Denver’s defense tightened significantly after the first 10 minutes, recording 11 steals and limiting UMKC’s opportunities. The Pioneers also won the battle inside, scoring 38 points in the paint to the Kangaroos’ 32.
The announced attendance was 372. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Denver, while Missouri-Kansas City saw its two-game win streak come to an end.
Both teams return to Summit League action on Saturday. Denver will host Oral Roberts, while Missouri-Kansas City welcomes South Dakota State.
