Dayton Flyers Dominate Early, Cruise Past Duquesne Dukes

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Dayton Flyers delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance, fueled by a suffocating first-half defensive effort, to defeat the Duquesne Dukes 75-58 in an Atlantic 10 women’s basketball game Wednesday night at A.J. Palumbo Center.

The Flyers (10-9, 2-3 A-10) seized control from the opening tip, establishing a 22-6 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. Dayton’s defense held the Dukes (7-12, 1-5) to just 18 points on 6-of-30 shooting in the first half, building a commanding 39-18 advantage at the break. The Dukes’ 18 first-half points marked a season low.

The most critical stretch of the game unfolded in the opening quarter, where Dayton’s defensive intensity completely overwhelmed Duquesne. The Flyers opened with a 16-0 run, holding the Dukes scoreless for the first 6:24 of the contest. Duquesne missed its first 11 field goal attempts and committed four turnovers before Harriet Ford’s layup finally got them on the board. Dayton guard Olivia Leung of Calgary, Alberta, set the tone early, hitting a pair of three-pointers in the first 90 seconds. The Flyers’ interior defense, led by 6-foot-3 freshman Fatima Ibrahim of Winnipeg, Manitoba, who blocked three shots, and 6-foot-2 Molly O’Riordan of Barrington, Illinois, altered countless attempts, forcing Duquesne into a series of difficult, contested shots.

Duquesne showed life after halftime, erupting for 28 points in the third quarter behind a more aggressive offensive approach. Guard Alexis Bordas of Wheeling, West Virginia, scored nine of her team-high 16 points in the period, and the Dukes trimmed the deficit to 13 points on several occasions. A three-pointer from Mackenzie Blackford of Solon, Ohio, just before the third-quarter buzzer made it 60-46.

Dayton, however, weathered the surge and responded decisively at the start of the fourth. The Flyers opened the final period with a 7-2 spurt, capped by a Nicole Stephens assist to Olivia Leung for a three-pointer, pushing the lead back to 19 points and effectively extinguishing any hope of a dramatic Duquesne comeback. The Dukes would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

Leung led all Dayton scorers with 15 points and dished out a game-high six assists, orchestrating the offense efficiently. Ajok Madol of Regina, Saskatchewan, provided a crucial spark off the bench with 13 points, including seven in the third quarter when Duquesne threatened to make a game of it. Ibrahim’s impact extended beyond her three blocks, as she added 10 points and five offensive rebounds in just 14 minutes of action.

For Duquesne, Bordas’s 16 points came on 5-of-17 shooting, emblematic of the team’s offensive struggles. Reina Green of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, contributed 14 points, while Serbian forward Dunja Zecevic added seven points, two blocks and a steady presence inside.

Statistically, the game was won on the defensive end and the glass. Dayton held Duquesne to 32.8% shooting from the field and posted an offensive rating of 111.7 points per 100 possessions, compared to Duquesne’s 81.5. The Flyers also won the rebounding battle 42-35, including a 13-9 edge on the offensive boards that led to 12 second-chance points.

The victory snapped a two-game losing skid for Dayton and avenged a narrow loss to Saint Louis last weekend. For Duquesne, the loss is their fifth in six conference games and continues a difficult stretch where they have struggled to score consistently against A-10 competition.

The win moves Dayton to a 2-3 conference record as they prepare to host Rhode Island on Sunday. Duquesne, still seeking traction in league play, will host Saint Joseph’s on Saturday. The Flyers swept the season series, having also defeated the Dukes 68-61 in Dayton on Jan. 3.
