Wyoming Holds Off Utah State Rally for Mountain West Win
BOSLER, Wyo. (Interstat) — The Wyoming Cowboys used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack to pull away from the Utah State Aggies for a 63-51 victory in a Mountain West Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Arena-Auditorium.
The most important part of the game was a suffocating third-quarter stretch by Wyoming that effectively decided the contest. Leading 29-24 at halftime, the Cowboys held Utah State to a single field goal in the entire third period, outscoring the Aggies 14-3 to build an insurmountable 43-27 lead entering the final quarter. Utah State managed just 1-of-13 shooting from the field in the quarter and committed four turnovers against a swarming Wyoming defense that recorded three blocks and two steals during the frame.
Wyoming set the tone early, opening the game on a 12-0 run fueled by three-pointers from Logann Alvar, Jane Rumpf and Henna Sandvik. Utah State spent the rest of the game trying to claw back from that initial deficit but could never fully recover. The Aggies closed the gap to five points by halftime, but the Cowboys’ third-quarter lockdown sealed the outcome.
Sandvik, a junior from Helsinki, Finland, led all scorers with 14 points in 32 minutes, adding two assists and a block. She was one of four Cowboys to reach double figures, joined by Malene Pedersen of Aabyhoej, Denmark, with 10 points and three assists, and Aurore Eyango of Lille, France, who contributed eight points off the bench. Rumpf, a Denver native, filled the stat sheet with nine points, four assists, two blocks and two steals in just 15 minutes of action.
Utah State was led by 14 points from Norwegian guard Karyn Sanford, who played 37 minutes. Aaliyah Gayles of Las Vegas added 12 points, and Andjela Marojevic of Vrbas, Serbia, chipped in 10 points in a reserve role.
Wyoming’s defense was the story, holding Utah State to 33.9% shooting from the field overall and a frigid 21.7% from three-point range. The Cowboys also blocked six shots and forced 17 Aggie turnovers, converting them into 13 points. Offensively, Wyoming was efficient, shooting 53.1% from the floor and scoring 38 points in the paint.
The Aggies showed life in the fourth quarter, scoring 24 points, but the margin built in the third was too great to overcome. Utah State finished the game shooting 20 of 59 from the field and committed 10 turnovers of their own.
With the win, Wyoming improved to 6-12 overall. Utah State fell to 6-12. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch in Logan on Saturday.
The announced attendance was 1,872.
