Williams Powers Iowa State Past Cincinnati in Big 12 Women’s Basketball
AMES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Iowa State Cyclones avenged a loss from just two weeks prior with a decisive 93-68 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats in a Big 12 women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The game was effectively decided by a dominant third-quarter surge from the Cyclones, who turned a 41-28 halftime lead into a 68-49 stranglehold entering the final period. That 27-point quarter, fueled by a relentless offensive rhythm, extinguished any hope of a Cincinnati comeback and showcased the gap between the two teams on this night.
Iowa State’s performance was a masterclass in offensive execution, spearheaded by a career-high 44 points from junior guard Jada Williams. The Kansas City, Missouri, native was spectacular, shooting 16 of 26 from the field, including 5 of 10 from three-point range, while also dishing out eight assists. Williams scored or assisted on over half of Iowa State’s points, consistently breaking down the Cincinnati defense and creating high-percentage looks for herself and her teammates.
She was complemented perfectly by sophomore center Audi Crooks of Algona, Iowa, who added 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting. The 6-foot-3 post player’s interior presence forced Cincinnati into difficult defensive choices all evening, and she contributed four assists and two blocks. Arianna Jackson of Des Moines chipped in 11 points for the Cyclones, who improved to 15-5 overall.
Cincinnati, which had defeated Iowa State 71-63 in Ohio on Jan. 7, found no such magic in the rematch. The Bearcats were plagued by 19 turnovers, which Iowa State converted into 22 points. While Kylie Torrence of High Point, North Carolina, led Cincinnati with 20 points, and Caliyah DeVillasee of Owings Mills, Maryland, added 15, the Bearcats’ offense never found a consistent flow against Iowa State’s active defense.
The Cyclones shot a blistering 55.7% from the field (34 of 61) and 42.3% from beyond the arc (11 of 26). Their offensive rating of 123.5 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of near-flawless execution. Conversely, Cincinnati managed just 42.6% shooting and was a paltry 4 of 14 from three-point range, posting an offensive rating of 85.4.
The statistical disparity was comprehensive. Iowa State won the assists battle 21 to 13, the steals battle 13 to 9, and outscored Cincinnati 32-22 in the paint and 22-12 off turnovers. Even a rare struggle at the free-throw line, where Iowa State shot just 14 of 28, could not derail the onslaught.
Cincinnati, which entered the game with a 7-12 record, showed brief resistance early. After falling behind 9-2, the Bearcats used a 6-0 run to close the first quarter down 21-12. They remained within striking distance for much of the second quarter, but a 10-2 Iowa State run to close the half, capped by a Crooks turnaround jumper, pushed the lead to 13 and set the stage for the decisive third-quarter knockout.
The Cyclones opened the second half on a 7-2 spurt, forcing a Cincinnati timeout just 90 seconds in. The lead ballooned to 20 by the midpoint of the quarter after back-to-back three-pointers from Williams, and the outcome was never in doubt thereafter. Iowa State’s lead peaked at 29 points in the final minutes before settling at the 25-point final margin.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Iowa State, which had dropped consecutive games to West Virginia, Colorado, and Oklahoma State. For Cincinnati, the loss continued a difficult season, dropping the Bearcats to 7-13.
A crowd of 9,083 at Hilton Coliseum watched the Cyclones control the game from start to finish, demonstrating why statistical models gave them a 94.6% probability to win. The win sets up a key conference showdown for Iowa State at home against Arizona on Saturday. Cincinnati returns home to face Arizona State, also on Saturday.
