Shockers Hold Off Tigers for Conference Win

WICHITA, Kan. (Interstat) — In a game defined more by grit than grace, the Wichita State women’s basketball team secured a rare conference victory Tuesday night, outlasting Memphis 66-59 at Charles Koch Arena. The win, powered by a career-defining performance from sophomore guard Abby Cater, snapped a five-game losing streak for the Shockers and provided a bright spot in a challenging season.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the third quarter, where Cater single-handedly seized control. After a sluggish first half that saw Memphis take an 18-16 lead into the second quarter and a 26-28 deficit into halftime, Wichita State emerged from the break with renewed purpose. Cater, a 5-foot-7 guard from PG County, Maryland, ignited a 21-point quarter for the Shockers by scoring 13 of those points herself. She connected on a pull-up jumper, a driving layup, and a critical 3-pointer, part of a personal 8-0 run that turned a two-point deficit into a six-point lead. Her burst propelled Wichita State to a 49-45 lead heading into the final period, a cushion they would not relinquish.

Cater finished with a game-high and career-best 42 points, a staggering output that accounted for nearly 64% of her team’s total scoring. She added two blocks and played 36 minutes, dominating the contest from the perimeter and in attack. Her performance was a dramatic departure from her recent outings, where she had scored 6, 17, and 5 points in the Shockers’ previous three losses.

The game was a struggle for offensive efficiency throughout. Both teams committed more turnovers than assists, with Wichita State giving the ball away 20 times to Memphis’s 16. The Tigers’ offensive woes were particularly pronounced; they shot just 31.3% from the field and a dismal 22.7% from beyond the arc. Perhaps most damaging was their performance at the free-throw line, where they converted only 14 of 25 attempts.

Memphis was led by a balanced effort, with four players scoring in double figures. Daejah Richmond, a guard from Cordova, Tennessee, posted 11 points and a team-high seven assists. Tamya Smith added 11 points and two blocks, while Amauri Williams and Chaé Harris each contributed 10 points. The Tigers’ defense was active, tallying 11 steals and six blocks, but they could not overcome their own scoring droughts.

For Wichita State, Taya Davis provided crucial facilitation, dishing out seven assists to go with three points in 40 minutes of action. Bre’Yon White added seven points off the bench. The Shockers were marginally better from the field, shooting 39.3%, and more reliable at the line, making 14 of 19 free throws.

The victory improved Wichita State’s record to 4-16 overall and 1-6 in American Athletic Conference play. Memphis fell to 7-12 and 2-5 in the league. The game drew an announced crowd of 894 to Charles Koch Arena.

Wichita State will look to build on this momentum when they travel to face East Carolina next Tuesday. Memphis returns home to host Texas-San Antonio on Saturday.
