Kent State Women Outlast Akron in MAC Showdown

KENT, Ohio (Interstat) — In a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball matchup defined by offensive efficiency and a standout individual performance, the Kent State Golden Flashes steadily pulled away from the visiting Akron Zips for a 91-79 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Athletics Center.

A crowd of 1,344 saw the Golden Flashes improve to 8-10 overall, while the Zips fell to 3-15. The result was largely driven by Kent State’s superior shooting and a career-high scoring outburst from sophomore forward Emory Klatt.

Klatt, a 6-foot-1 native of Kildeer, Illinois, came off the bench to dominate the interior, scoring a game-high 29 points in just 24 minutes of action. She was remarkably efficient, making 11 of her 14 field goal attempts and adding 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Her performance continued a strong stretch, coming just three days after she scored 17 points in a win over Ohio.

The game’s most critical sequence came late in the third quarter and bled into the fourth, turning a competitive contest into a comfortable Kent State lead. Leading 63-58 with under a minute left in the third, Klatt grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a putback at the buzzer to push the advantage to seven points. She then opened the fourth quarter with a driving layup, and after an Akron turnover, scored again in transition while being fouled, completing the three-point play. That personal 7-0 run across the quarter break extended the Kent State lead to 72-61 and effectively stifled Akron’s momentum for good.

While Klatt provided the explosive scoring, the Golden Flashes won with consistency and ball security. They shot a blistering 59.3 percent from the field (32 of 54) compared to Akron’s 44.3 percent (27 of 61). Kent State also capitalized at the free throw line, making 23 of 28 attempts. Despite committing 16 turnovers to Akron’s 12, the Golden Flashes more than offset that with an offensive rating of 116.2, scoring 91 points on just 78 possessions.

Akron was led by a valiant effort from forward Ni’Rah Clark. The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Toledo, Ohio, posted 22 points, two blocks and two steals in 30 minutes. Guard Shaena Brew added 13 points, while Corinne Reed contributed eight points and three assists. The Zips fought to stay within striking distance throughout, trailing by just four points at halftime, 43-37, but could not contain Klatt or match Kent State’s shooting accuracy in the second half.

Kent State’s supporting cast was crucial. Guard Mya Babbitt of Papillion, Nebraska, played 36 minutes and scored 19 points, including three 3-pointers. Center Riley Rismiller provided a strong inside presence with 11 points, and point guard Dionna Gray, despite eight turnovers, orchestrated the offense with six assists. Brazilian guard Bianca Juzzo added seven points, three assists and a block.

The Golden Flashes controlled the glass, limiting Akron to just nine offensive rebounds while securing the majority of defensive boards to fuel their efficient transition game. Akron’s 5-of-20 shooting from beyond the arc also hampered their ability to mount a sustained comeback.

The victory gives Kent State a positive start to the MAC schedule and momentum heading into a road game at Buffalo next Saturday. Akron, still seeking its first conference win, will look to regroup when it hosts Central Michigan on Wednesday.

The game unfolded largely as statistical models predicted, with Kent State entering as a heavy favorite. The Golden Flashes executed their game plan effectively, leveraging their significant advantages in field goal percentage and free throw accuracy to secure a double-digit conference win.
