Massachusetts Routs Akron in Mid-American Conference Women’s Basketball

HADLEY, Mass. (Interstat) — The Massachusetts Minutemen used a dominant first quarter to build an insurmountable lead and cruised to an 82-68 victory over the Akron Zips in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday afternoon at the Mullins Center.

A crowd of 5,121 saw the Minutemen (12-3, 3-1 MAC) explode for 28 points in the opening period, capitalizing on a flurry of early Akron turnovers to seize control. The Zips (3-14, 0-4), meanwhile, struggled to find their footing, committing nine turnovers in the first quarter alone that led to 14 quick points for Massachusetts.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably that initial surge. Massachusetts set the tone from the opening tip, with Megan Olbrys connecting on a 3-pointer just 43 seconds into the contest. The Minutemen’s defensive pressure was relentless, forcing Akron into rushed shots and errant passes. By the time the first quarter ended with an Allie Palmieri 3-pointer at the buzzer, Massachusetts led 28-14 and had established a commanding 46-26 advantage in points in the paint for the game, a margin that would only grow.

Akron, led by a game-high 25 points from Ni’Rah Clark, showed resilience and actually outscored Massachusetts in the final three quarters, 54-51. The Zips cut the deficit to 11 points on several occasions in the second half but could never mount a sustained run to truly threaten. Every time Akron scored, Massachusetts had an answer, often in the form of a drive to the basket or a second-chance opportunity.

The Minutemen showcased a balanced and efficient offensive attack, with five players scoring in double figures. Point guard Yahmani McKayle, the team’s top star, orchestrated the offense masterfully, finishing with 15 points and 11 assists. Her playmaking was pivotal in exploiting Akron’s defensive lapses and feeding teammates for easy baskets inside.

Allie Palmieri added 16 points, while Jess Ross and Megan Olbrys each contributed 13. Lilly Ferguson posted a solid all-around line of 13 points and seven rebounds. The Minutemen’s ability to share the ball and score from multiple positions proved too much for an Akron squad that relied heavily on Clark, who also grabbed seven rebounds.

For the Zips, Monique Mitchell provided support with 11 points, but the team’s 21 turnovers, which Massachusetts converted into 30 points, were a decisive factor. Akron also struggled to contain the Minutemen’s interior game, losing the battle in the paint by a staggering 46-26 margin.

The victory keeps Massachusetts near the top of the MAC standings as it prepares for a road test at Buffalo on Saturday. Akron, still searching for its first conference win, will look to rebound Saturday at Kent State.

The game unfolded largely as expected according to advanced metrics, with Interstat’s ELO system having given Massachusetts a 97.2 percent probability to win. The Minutemen’s early execution ensured that projection held true, as they never trailed after the game’s opening minute and led by double digits for the final 33 minutes of play.
