Colorado Rallies Past Iowa State in Big 12 Women’s Basketball

BOULDER, Colo. (Interstat) — In a gritty, defensive-minded Big 12 Conference clash, the Colorado Buffaloes rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to hand the Iowa State Cyclones their third consecutive loss, 68-62, in women’s basketball on Wednesday night at a raucous Coors Events Center.

The game, witnessed by 4,183 fans, was defined by physicality, missed opportunities, and a decisive final period where the Buffaloes outscored the Cyclones 26-20 to flip the script. Iowa State, which led for the majority of the contest, saw its offense stagnate down the stretch while Colorado capitalized at the free-throw line to seal the victory.

The contest was a tale of two halves, and ultimately, two quarters. Iowa State established an early rhythm, leading 16-13 after the first quarter and extending its advantage to 29-25 at halftime. The Cyclones’ defense was particularly disruptive in the first half, generating eight steals and forcing 11 Colorado turnovers. Audi Crooks, Iowa State’s 6-foot-3 center from Algona, Iowa, anchored the paint with four first-half blocks, altering countless other attempts.

Colorado’s offense, however, found its footing in the third quarter behind the dynamic scoring of guard Desiree Wooten. The Dallas native poured in 10 of her game-high 24 points in the period, attacking the rim and drawing fouls. Despite her efforts, Iowa State maintained a slim 42-40 lead heading into the final frame, thanks to a late three-pointer from Reese Beaty.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Buffaloes. They opened with a 6-0 run, seizing a lead they would not relinquish. The turning point came with just over seven minutes remaining. With Colorado leading 48-46, Iowa State’s Mackenzie Hare connected on a three-pointer to pull the Cyclones within one. On the ensuing possession, however, Colorado’s Jade Masogayo secured two consecutive offensive rebounds before finally converting a putback, igniting the home crowd and halting Iowa State’s momentum.

Iowa State’s offensive struggles proved fatal. The Cyclones shot just 38.6% from the field for the game and a crippling 50% from the free-throw line, missing several front ends of one-and-one opportunities in the clutch. Colorado, conversely, was efficient when it mattered most, hitting 14 of 18 free throws, including critical makes in the final minute.

Crooks finished with 17 points and four blocks for Iowa State, while Sydney Harris added 16 points. Jada Williams contributed nine points and five assists. For Colorado, Wooten’s 24-point performance was complemented by 15 points from Masogayo and 10 points and four assists from Zyanna Walker. Colorado’s dominance on the glass was a key factor, as they outrebounded Iowa State 16-7 on the offensive end, leading to 16 second-chance points.

The loss drops Iowa State to 14-4 overall and marks its third straight defeat in conference play after opening the Big 12 schedule with a 2-0 record. Colorado improves to 12-6 and snaps a two-game skid of its own.

The game’s tempo was deliberate, with Iowa State averaging 0.853 points per possession and Colorado managing 0.900. Both teams combined for 33 turnovers in a contest defined more by defensive pressure than offensive artistry.

Iowa State will look to halt its slide when it travels to face Oklahoma State on Sunday. Colorado continues its homestand with a game against UCF, also on Sunday.
