East Carolina Routs Tulsa in American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — The East Carolina Pirates used a dominant third-quarter surge to overwhelm the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 79-48 in an American Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at Williams Arena.
A tightly contested first half gave way to a decisive period after halftime, where the Pirates outscored the visitors 26-17 to turn a 10-point lead into an insurmountable advantage. The victory improved East Carolina to 12-6 overall, while Tulsa fell to 11-5.
The game’s pivotal shift came in the third quarter, sparked by the backcourt duo of Kennedy Fauntleroy and Savannah Brooks. After Tulsa had trimmed the deficit to eight points early in the period, East Carolina unleashed a 15-2 run over a four-minute span. The run featured a balanced attack, with Fauntleroy and Brooks orchestrating the offense and Keanna Rembert providing an interior presence. The Pirates shot efficiently during the burst, capitalizing on a series of Tulsa turnovers that plagued the Golden Hurricane all evening.
Fauntleroy, a guard from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was the engine for East Carolina, finishing with a game-high 21 points and seven assists in 38 minutes. Brooks, from Taneytown, Maryland, added 19 points, while Raleigh native Rembert contributed 16 points, three assists and three blocks. Their combined effort in the third quarter effectively sealed the outcome, stretching a 33-23 halftime lead to 59-40 heading into the final frame.
Tulsa struggled offensively throughout, shooting just 32.1% from the field and committing 22 turnovers against only five assists. The Golden Hurricane’s offensive rating of 65.1 points per 100 possessions starkly contrasted with East Carolina’s mark of 101.7. Tulsa never found a consistent rhythm, with its eight-point fourth quarter representing its lowest output of the night.
Jade Clack led Tulsa with eight points, while Shamaryah Duncan provided a brief spark off the bench with eight points in just nine minutes, all scored in the second quarter. The Golden Hurricane’s offensive woes were compounded by East Carolina’s defensive activity, which produced eight steals and six blocks.
The first half was a more competitive affair, though East Carolina maintained control after closing the first quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 18-11. Tulsa’s Duncan hit two three-pointers in the second quarter to keep her team within striking distance, but the Pirates answered each mini-run to maintain a double-digit cushion at the break.
The announced attendance was 687. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Tulsa had been projected with a 55.3% probability to win entering the contest.
East Carolina next hosts Temple on Saturday. Tulsa continues its road trip at Charlotte on Saturday.
