Dayton Outlasts Fordham in Tight Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Contest
NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a gritty Atlantic 10 Conference clash defined more by defensive persistence than offensive artistry, the Dayton Flyers used a dominant fourth-quarter surge to secure a 66-58 victory over the Fordham Rams in women’s basketball on Saturday at Rose Hill Gym.
The game, played before an intimate crowd of 239, saw both teams struggle to find a consistent scoring rhythm. Dayton improved to 9-7 overall, while Fordham evened its record at 8-8.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair for three quarters, featuring 10 ties and 12 lead changes. Neither team led by more than five points until the final minutes. The Flyers and Rams were deadlocked at 31 at halftime, and Fordham carried a slim 48-44 advantage into the final period after outscoring Dayton 17-13 in the third.
The decisive turning point came in the fourth quarter, where Dayton’s defense clamped down and its offense finally found a measure of efficiency. The Flyers held Fordham to just 10 points on 4-of-17 shooting in the final frame while forcing five turnovers. Conversely, Dayton erupted for 22 points, its highest-scoring quarter of the afternoon, shooting 8 of 15 from the field.
Dayton’s victory was anchored by a monumental performance from junior guard Nayo Lear. The South Holland, Illinois, native scored a game-high 30 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and added five rebounds and four assists. Lear’s scoring outburst was a season high and provided the crucial offensive engine for the Flyers on a day where team shooting was poor. Dayton shot just 37.7 percent from the field and a frigid 13 percent from three-point range.
Lear received vital support from sophomore forward Fatima Ibrahim of Winnipeg, Canada. Ibrahim posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, but her most significant impact came on the defensive end, where she swatted four shots. Her interior presence helped Dayton out-rebound Fordham 49-42, including a 16-10 edge on the offensive glass that led to 15 second-chance points.
Fordham was led by the backcourt duo of Carryn Easley and Lakresha Edwards. Easley, a sophomore from Philadelphia, filled the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Edwards, a junior from Chilliwack, Canada, led the Rams with 17 points. However, the Rams’ offense sputtered down the stretch, managing only two field goals in the final six minutes of play.
Both teams were plagued by turnovers and inefficient offense throughout. Dayton committed 19 turnovers to Fordham’s 15. The Flyers scored 66 points on 76 possessions for an offensive rating of 87.0, while the Rams managed only 58 points on 77 possessions, an offensive rating of 75.5. Dayton’s ability to get to the free-throw line proved a key differentiator; the Flyers attempted 25 free throws, making 17, compared to Fordham’s 8-of-8 performance from the stripe.
The win snaps a two-game losing streak for Dayton in conference play. The Flyers will look to build on the momentum when they host Richmond on Wednesday. Fordham, which has now lost three of its last four, hits the road to face Davidson on Wednesday.
