Nevada Outlasts Wyoming in Overtime in Mountain West Women’s Basketball
RENO, Nev. (Interstat) — In a game defined by wild momentum swings and a dramatic late collapse, the Nevada women’s basketball team outlasted Wyoming 70-60 in overtime on Wednesday night at Lawlor Events Center, overcoming a significant second-half deficit to secure a Mountain West Conference victory.
The contest appeared firmly in Wyoming’s control for much of the second half, but Nevada mounted a furious rally in the final minutes of regulation before dominating the extra period to hand the Cowgirls their third consecutive loss.
Wyoming, which led by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, saw its offense evaporate when it mattered most. After scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter to build and maintain a lead, the Cowgirls managed just a single point in the five-minute overtime period. Nevada, conversely, found its rhythm, scoring 11 points in overtime to pull away decisively.
The most critical juncture of the game came in the final two minutes of regulation. Holding a 58-53 lead, Wyoming committed a costly turnover and saw a three-point attempt blocked, allowing Nevada to claw back. The Wolf Pack’s Skylar Durley was fouled on a defensive rebound with 10 seconds left and made the second of two free throws to tie the game at 59. Wyoming’s Henna Sandvik then missed a potential game-winning three-pointer as time expired, forcing overtime.
From there, Nevada seized complete control. Durley opened the extra period with a jump shot and later hit a crucial three-pointer, part of her game-high 18 points, to establish a lead the Cowgirls could not challenge. Wyoming missed all five of its field goal attempts in overtime and turned the ball over twice, their only point coming from a Malene Pedersen free throw.
The game’s narrative was one of starkly contrasting halves. Nevada exploded early, using a 23-point first quarter to build a double-digit lead. Amelia Raidaveta and Ahrray Young fueled the early surge for the Wolf Pack. Wyoming, however, displayed resilience, clamping down defensively in the second quarter to hold Nevada to just seven points. A 15-2 run spanning the first and second quarters allowed the Cowgirls to erase the deficit and take a lead they would hold for most of the next two periods.
Sandvik, a freshman from Helsinki, Finland, led Wyoming with 18 points in a game-high 42 minutes. Logann Alvar of Casper added nine points. For Nevada, Durley, a guard from Oklahoma City, complemented her 18 points with four assists. Young, from Sacramento, provided a vital 11 points, three assists and a key block in the final seconds of regulation.
The win improved Nevada’s record to 6-9 overall. The Wolf Pack, who had lost four of their last five entering the game, will travel to face New Mexico on Saturday.
Wyoming fell to 4-10 with the defeat, continuing a difficult stretch in conference play. The Cowgirls, who were projected as strong favorites by advanced metrics pregame, have struggled offensively in recent weeks, a trend that culminated in the overtime shutout. They will look to rebound at home against UNLV on Saturday.
An announced crowd of 1,344 watched the conference matchup, which featured 10 lead changes and eight ties before Nevada’s overtime surge decided it.
