Long, Powell Lead Fresno State Women Past San Jose State
FRESNO, Calif. (Interstat) — Emilia Long and Danae Powell combined for 42 points to power Fresno State past San Jose State 67-52 in a Mountain West women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Save Mart Center.
The Bulldogs used a dominant second-quarter surge to build an insurmountable lead, overcoming a sluggish second half to secure the conference victory in front of 917 fans.
Fresno State, which improved to 7-8 overall, closed the first quarter on a 14-2 run to lead 19-14. The Bulldogs then exploded in the second period, outscoring the Spartans 27-9. Long, a sophomore guard from Port Angeles, Washington, was instrumental in the blitz, scoring 11 of her game-high 22 points during the quarter. Her backcourt mate, Danae Powell of Las Vegas, added 10 points in the frame, including a pair of three-pointers.
The Bulldogs’ 46-23 halftime advantage proved decisive. San Jose State, which fell to 2-14, never got closer than 15 points in the second half despite holding Fresno State to just eight points in the third quarter. The Spartans won the final period 19-13 but could not mount a serious threat.
Long finished with 22 points and two assists in 34 minutes. Powell added 20 points, one assist, and three steals in 35 minutes. Indiya Clarke of Wasilla, Alaska, provided 11 points for the Bulldogs.
San Jose State was led by Carla Fuster of Barcelona, Spain, and Allie Cummins of Moraga, California, who each scored 11 points. Fuster added two assists, while Cummins had one. Gabriela Pato, a 6-foot-4 center from Vigo, Spain, contributed seven points and two blocked shots. Maya Anderson of Toronto scored nine points and blocked a shot.
The most critical sequence of the game occurred late in the second quarter, cementing Fresno State’s commanding lead. With the Bulldogs already ahead 33-21, they closed the half on a 13-2 run over the final 2:38. The run was punctuated by an Ava Marr steal that led to a Powell layup, followed by a San Jose State turnover that resulted in an Emilia Long jumper. After a pair of free throws from San Jose State’s Mecca Alexander, Long drained a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer, assisted by Marr, to send Fresno State into the locker room with a 46-23 lead and all momentum.
Fresno State’s defense was disruptive throughout, forcing 27 San Jose State turnovers, which led to 28 points. The Spartans struggled to find consistent offense outside of their brief fourth-quarter push.
The Bulldogs next travel to face Grand Canyon on Saturday. San Jose State returns home to host Air Force on Saturday, looking to snap a two-game skid.
The game was a conference opener for both teams. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Fresno State entered with a 94.20 percent probability to win.
