San Francisco at Loyola Marymount
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Two West Coast Conference women’s basketball teams trending in opposite directions will meet Sunday when the San Francisco Dons visit the Loyola Marymount Lions at Gersten Pavilion.
San Francisco (8-5) enters on a winning note, having edged Portland 67-64 on Tuesday. The Dons have won two of their last three, though they dropped a conference game to Oregon State 74-65 on Dec. 28.
Loyola Marymount (7-6) also won its last outing, a 67-58 road victory at Washington State on Tuesday. That win snapped a two-game skid for the Lions, who fell in double-overtime at Gonzaga 87-80 on Dec. 28.
The matchup features a contrast in recent offensive production. The Dons have been held under 70 points in five straight games. Guard Mara Neira, their player to watch, led the team with 16 points in the win over Portland but was limited to five points against Oregon State.
The Lions, meanwhile, have scored at least 76 points in three of their last five contests. Their offense runs through guard Jess Lawson, who is coming off a 16-point performance at Washington State and dropped 27 points in a loss at Wichita State on Dec. 13.
Defense may dictate the pace. San Francisco has proven capable of grinding out low-scoring wins, as seen in victories over Sacramento State (61-55) and Portland. Loyola Marymount’s conference loss to Gonzaga showed its potent offense but also revealed defensive vulnerabilities in a high-scoring affair.
This game opens a critical January conference slate for both squads. The Dons will look to establish momentum before a tough upcoming stretch that includes two games against Gonzaga. The Lions aim to protect their home court before facing Oregon State next week.
Tipoff is set for Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, in Los Angeles.
