Ball State at Akron
AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — A surging Ball State squad looks to close non-conference play on a high note when it visits struggling Akron in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Cardinals (9-4) enter with a winning record built on a potent offense, averaging over 75 points per game in their victories. They are coming off a 78-74 home win over Eastern Michigan on Dec. 20, where Grace Kingery and Tessa Towers each scored 21 points. Kingery, a player to watch for Ball State, is averaging 14.2 points over her last five games, including a 21-point performance against Eastern Michigan and a 16-point outing in a 119-34 rout of Oakland City on Dec. 3.
Ball State has shown its capabilities, with notable wins over Cincinnati and Memphis, but has also stumbled against high-major opponents like Louisville and South Dakota State.
The Zips (3-9) have faced a tough schedule and seek consistency. They snapped a three-game skid with a 94-68 victory over Le Moyne on Dec. 21, led by Keiryn McGuff’s 20 points. McGuff, Akron’s key player, has been a bright spot, averaging 11 points over her last four contests. However, Akron has struggled against stronger competition, with double-digit losses to Michigan, Delaware, and Notre Dame highlighting their season.
Defense may be a concern for the home team; Akron has allowed 85 or more points in four of its nine losses. Ball State’s offensive balance, which features multiple scoring threats beyond Kingery, will test that unit.
This game opens the MAC schedule for both teams. Ball State aims to establish itself as a conference contender, while Akron hopes to find a foothold at home. The Cardinals won both meetings last season.
Tip-off is set for Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. Ball State visits Northern Illinois on Jan. 3, while Akron travels to Ohio the same day.
