Stony Brook at College of Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging College of Charleston squad looks to rebound from a rare stumble when it hosts a streaking Stony Brook team in a key late-season women’s basketball matchup Thursday at TD Arena.
The Cougars (22-5), among the conference leaders, saw a four-game win streak snapped with a 59-57 home loss to Campbell on Sunday. They will be tested by a Seawolves (17-12) team that has won three straight and four of its last five.
The game features a compelling backcourt duel between two of the league’s top guards. Charleston’s Taryn Barbot enters as one of the conference’s most dynamic scorers. She poured in 36 points in a win at Towson on Feb. 20 and is averaging 21.4 points over her last five games, including 23 in the loss to Campbell.
Stony Brook will counter with floor general Sandra Frau-Garcia, who orchestrates the Seawolves’ offense. Over her last eight games, she has averaged 8.9 points and 6.0 assists, including a nine-assist performance in Sunday’s 62-58 win over Elon. Diaka Berete provided a scoring punch in that victory with a team-high 17 points.
The Cougars have been dominant at home, boasting a 12-2 record at TD Arena this season. Their offense has frequently overwhelmed opponents, scoring 80 or more points in three of their last six games. Stony Brook, however, has found a formula in close contests, winning its last three games by an average of just 5.3 points, relying on defense and timely execution.
Thursday’s contest serves as a final tune-up before both teams conclude their regular seasons on Saturday. Charleston will look to reassert its home-court dominance and solidify its standing, while Stony Brook aims to extend its win streak and build momentum heading into the conference tournament. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST.
