Stony Brook Holds Off Hampton for 67‑58 Women’s Basketball Victory

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — A dominant first-quarter performance and a late-game surge proved enough for the Stony Brook Seawolves to fend off a persistent Hampton rally and secure a 67-58 victory in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday night at Island Federal Credit Union Arena.

In a rematch of a Jan. 2 contest won by Hampton, the Seawolves exacted revenge by building a commanding early lead and then holding off the Pirates down the stretch. Stony Brook improved to 16-12 on the season, while Hampton fell to 9-18.

The game turned decisively in the opening period. Stony Brook raced out to a 23-8 lead, capitalizing on a stifling defensive effort that forced six Hampton turnovers and limited the Pirates to 3-of-13 shooting from the field. The Seawolves’ offense was efficient and balanced, with Diaka Berete and Johanna Potter each scoring early baskets to set the tone. Hampton’s offensive struggles were compounded by a nearly five-minute scoring drought in the quarter, allowing Stony Brook to establish a 15-point cushion that would loom large all night.

Hampton, however, refused to capitulate. The Pirates chipped away in the second quarter, outscoring Stony Brook 17-9 behind the scoring of Kiarra Mcelrath and a more disruptive defensive approach. A 10-2 run by Hampton, capped by a Taylor Gibson 3-pointer and a transition layup from Olivia Smith, cut the deficit to 30-25 with just over five minutes remaining in the half. The Seawolves’ offense grew stagnant, managing only two field goals in the entire second quarter as their lead dwindled to 32-25 at halftime.

The third quarter became a tense, back-and-forth affair. Every time Hampton threatened to draw closer, Stony Brook found an answer, often from Janay Brantley or Berete. The Pirates pulled within four points on multiple occasions, but could never get the crucial stop and score to cut the lead to a single possession. Stony Brook maintained a 49-42 advantage heading into the final period.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded early in the fourth quarter. After a Mcelrath 3-pointer brought Hampton within 51-47, the Pirates had multiple opportunities to further close the gap but came up empty on consecutive possessions. Stony Brook then delivered a decisive 8-0 run over a two-minute span. The spurt was fueled by interior play, with Johanna Potter assisting on a Chloe Oliver layup and then Sandra Frau-Garcia driving for a basket to push the lead back to 59-47 with 4:19 remaining.

Hampton made one final push, trimming the lead to 62-58 after an Aisha Dabo layup with 1:47 left. On the ensuing possession, however, the Seawolves effectively sealed the game. Working the shot clock, Frau-Garcia drained a clutch 3-pointer from the wing with just 12 seconds remaining, assisted by Brantley, to extend the lead to 67-58 and extinguish Hampton’s hopes.

Janay Brantley led Stony Brook with 17 points and five assists, providing steady leadership throughout. Diaka Berete added 14 points, and Johanna Potter contributed 11 points and two assists. The Seawolves won despite committing 19 turnovers, thanks to a significant 14-6 advantage in offensive rebounds and a 27-of-57 shooting performance from the field.

For Hampton, Kiarra Mcelrath shouldered the offensive load with a game-high 20 points. Olivia Smith orchestrated the offense with eight assists to go with nine points, and Taylor Gibson added 12 points. The Pirates’ defense forced turnovers but were ultimately undone by their own 15 giveaways and an inability to consistently contain Stony Brook’s offensive rebounds, which led to 14 second-chance points.

The announced attendance was 451. Stony Brook will host Elon on Sunday, while Hampton travels to face Northeastern.
