Santa Clara Holds Off Pacific Rally in High-Scoring Women’s Basketball Contest
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening half and a frantic, high-scoring finish, the Santa Clara Broncos weathered a furious fourth-quarter rally from the Pacific Tigers to secure an 87-79 victory in a West Coast Conference women’s basketball matchup Thursday night at a sparsely attended Leavey Center.
The Broncos, improving to 22-8 overall, built a commanding 48-36 halftime lead behind a blistering offensive display in the first two quarters, shooting over 50% from the field. Pacific, which fell to 11-17, could not match that early efficiency and spent the rest of the night playing catch-up.
Santa Clara’s first-half command was established by a balanced attack. Guard Ashley Hawkins orchestrated the offense with nine assists by the break, while forwards Delainey Miller and Kylee Fox provided consistent scoring. Pacific, meanwhile, struggled to find a rhythm against Santa Clara’s active defense, committing eight first-half turnovers and connecting on just five free throws all night, a critical factor in the final margin.
The third quarter saw the Broncos extend their lead, holding Pacific to 16 points while maintaining a double-digit advantage. The pivotal stretch of the game, however, arrived in the final period. The Tigers, led by the dynamic scoring of guard Daria Nestorov, erupted for 27 points. Nestorov, who finished with a game-high 20 points, spearheaded the charge with a series of driving layups and perimeter shots, cutting a once-comfortable Santa Clara lead to single digits in the closing minutes.
Each time Pacific threatened, Santa Clara had an answer, primarily at the free-throw line. The Broncos attempted 28 free throws, making 19, while Pacific went to the line only nine times. In the final 37 seconds, with Pacific forced to foul, Santa Clara’s Hawkins and Ava Schmidt combined to sink five of six free throws to seal the game. Hawkins finished with 19 points and nine assists, narrowly missing a double-double. Miller also scored 19 for the Broncos, and Schmidt added 14 points and three blocks.
Despite the loss, Pacific showed resilience. Nestorov’s 20-point effort was supplemented by 12 points from Sophia Mindermann and 10 from Nyah Lowery. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 44-41, including 12 offensive boards, but were ultimately undone by Santa Clara’s superior shooting efficiency and their own inability to convert from the charity stripe.
The game’s most important sequence occurred in the final minute. After a Nestorov three-pointer brought Pacific within six points with just over two minutes to play, the Broncos executed a critical offensive possession. Following a timeout, Ashley Hawkins drew a foul on a drive and made both free throws to push the lead back to eight. On the ensuing trip, Pacific’s Sydney Ward had a layup blocked by Ava Schmidt, and Santa Clara secured the defensive rebound. The Broncos then successfully navigated the Tigers’ pressure and foul strategy, making their free throws to close out the win.
Santa Clara’s offensive rating of 112.5 points per 100 possessions outpaced Pacific’s 103.6, underscoring the Broncos’ more effective shot creation and selection. The Broncos also dished out eight assists to Pacific’s six and recorded eight steals.
The victory completed a regular-season split for Santa Clara, which lost to Pacific 90-82 on Feb. 5. The Broncos will conclude their regular season at home against San Francisco on Saturday. Pacific continues its road trip with a game at San Diego on Saturday.
