Late Surge Lifts Texas A&M Women Past Mississippi State
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by a stunning and decisive final-quarter surge, the Texas A&M women’s basketball team erased a nine-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to defeat Mississippi State 68-64 on Thursday night at Reed Arena.
The Aggies, who had trailed for the vast majority of the Southeastern Conference contest, outscored the Lady Bulldogs 27-18 in the final period, flipping the script with a combination of stifling defense and clutch shot-making down the stretch. The victory improved Texas A&M to 13-11 overall, while Mississippi State fell to 18-11.
For three quarters, the game was a tense, back-and-forth affair characterized by physical defense and offensive struggles. The teams were deadlocked at 12-12 after the first quarter and 25-25 at halftime. Mississippi State found a rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring Texas A&M 21-16 to take a 46-41 lead into the final 10 minutes. Madison Francis was instrumental in building that lead, scoring 10 of her game-high 19 points in the third period.
The most important part of the game, however, was Texas A&M’s remarkable fourth-quarter response. The Aggies opened the period on a 12-4 run, fueled by Ny’Ceara Pryor and Fatmata Janneh, to seize a 53-50 lead with 6:33 remaining. Pryor, the 5-foot-3 dynamo from Baltimore, was the catalyst for the comeback, scoring 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and orchestrating the offense with precision. She finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 assists.
Mississippi State refused to fold, with Chandler Prater hitting a critical three-pointer to tie the game at 55-55 with 6:07 left. The teams traded blows over the next three minutes, with the score knotted at 59-59 after two free throws from Mississippi State’s Favour Nwaedozi with 2:13 on the clock.
The Aggies then delivered the decisive sequence. Following a Mississippi State turnover, Janneh sank a pair of free throws to put Texas A&M ahead for good at 61-59 with 1:41 remaining. After another Lady Bulldog turnover, Salese Blow connected on a tough turnaround jumper to extend the lead to four. Mississippi State had opportunities in the final minute but could not convert, while Texas A&M sealed the game at the free-throw line, with Blow making one of two with six seconds left for the final margin.
Janneh, a 6-foot-1 forward from London, England, provided crucial support for Pryor with 15 points, including two key three-pointers. Blow added nine points off the bench, all in the second half. Lauren Ware anchored the defense with three blocks.
For Mississippi State, Francis led all scorers with 19 points and added two blocks. Prater contributed 13 points and four assists, while Trayanna Crisp and Nwaedozi each scored 12 points. Nwaedozi also pulled down 11 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs dominated inside, scoring 30 points in the paint to Texas A&M’s 20, but were ultimately undone by the Aggies’ late-game execution.
The game was a defensive struggle, with both teams forcing turnovers and contesting shots fiercely throughout. Texas A&M scored 13 points off 15 Mississippi State turnovers, while the Lady Bulldogs scored 15 points off 13 Aggie giveaways.
A crowd of 2,932 at Reed Arena watched the Aggies snap a two-game home losing streak in conference play. Mississippi State, which entered the game having lost two of its last three, saw its hopes for a late-season road victory dashed by the Aggies’ furious finish.
Texas A&M will look to build on the comeback win when it travels to face Mississippi on Sunday. Mississippi State returns home to host LSU, also on Sunday.
