Williams Leads Coastal Carolina to Overtime Win Over Georgia State
ATLANTA (Interstat) — In a game that mirrored their seasons, the Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team found a way to win a close one, while Georgia State found another agonizing way to lose.
The Chanticleers outlasted the Panthers 92-84 in overtime on Tuesday night in a Sun Belt Conference contest at GSU Sports Arena, avenging a loss from December.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the final minute of regulation, a chaotic sequence that saw Georgia State erase a five-point deficit to force the extra period, only for Coastal Carolina to dominate once it got there.
Coastal Carolina, which improved to 14-16 overall, appeared to have sealed the victory when a layup by Tracey Hueston gave the Chanticleers an 82-77 lead with just 41 seconds remaining. The Panthers, however, mounted a desperate and gritty comeback. Crystal Henderson drew a foul on a three-point attempt and sank all three free throws to cut the lead to two. Then, after a critical turnover by Coastal Carolina’s Kristin Williams, Cheyenne Holloman was fouled on a driving layup and completed the three-point play with 41 seconds left, putting Georgia State ahead 83-82.
The Chanticleers’ Kinsea Grimes was then fouled and made one of two free throws to tie the game at 83 with 38 seconds left. Georgia State had the final possession of regulation, but Henderson, who was brilliant all night, committed a turnover with three seconds left, giving Coastal Carolina a final heave that missed, sending the game to overtime tied at 83.
The overtime period belonged entirely to the visitors. The Chanticleers scored the first nine points, holding Georgia State scoreless for nearly four minutes. A layup by Hueston, followed by a steal and score from Grimes and a three-pointer from Kristin Williams, quickly built a 92-83 lead. The Panthers, who fell to 9-20, managed only a single free throw from Holloman until a meaningless basket at the final buzzer, scoring just seven points in the extra session.
The game was a showcase for Coastal Carolina’s offensive balance and resilience. Kristin Williams, a 5-foot-8 guard from San Diego, led all scorers with 22 points, including four three-pointers, and added a block and a steal in 41 minutes. Her backcourt mate, Baylee Lowder of Tooele, Utah, added 15 points. The Chanticleers’ interior presence was dominant, with 6-foot-2 forward Tracey Hueston of Roanoke, Virginia, scoring 20 points and Kinsea Grimes, a 6-foot forward from Mansfield, Texas, contributing 18 points and several key defensive plays.
Georgia State was led by the dynamic guard play of Crystal Henderson. The 5-foot-5 Marietta native poured in 21 points and dished out four assists, repeatedly keeping her team in the game with drives and free throws. Kaleigh Addie, an Atlanta native, added 19 points, and Grace Lanier scored 14.
The game was tightly contested throughout, featuring 18 lead changes and 10 ties. Neither team led by more than seven points in regulation. Coastal Carolina took a narrow 34-32 lead into halftime, but Georgia State responded with a strong third quarter to take a 52-50 advantage into the final period. The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair, setting the stage for the dramatic final minute.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Coastal Carolina and provided a measure of payback for a 68-63 home loss to Georgia State on Dec. 20. For the Panthers, it was a fifth consecutive defeat and their ninth loss in the last ten games, with several of those losses, including this one, coming in heartbreaking fashion.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 583. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Coastal Carolina entered with a 58.10 percent probability to win.
Coastal Carolina travels to face James Madison on Friday. Georgia State will host Louisiana-Lafayette, also on Friday.
