Drexel Edges Hampton in Defensive Struggle
HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities and a frantic final sequence, the Drexel Dragons escaped the Convocation Center with a narrow 50-47 victory over the Hampton Pirates in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday night.
The contest, played before an announced crowd of 517, was a stark contrast to the teams’ meeting just two weeks prior, when Drexel cruised to a 75-42 win. This time, neither team could find consistent offensive rhythm, combining for a low-scoring affair that came down to the final possession.
Drexel established an early lead, closing the first quarter ahead 15-12 behind efficient play in the paint. The Dragons’ interior dominance was a theme throughout, as they finished with a commanding 30-8 advantage in points in the paint. Hampton stayed within reach primarily through the efforts of guard Kiarra Mcelrath. The Columbus, Ohio, native scored a game-high 19 points, including a crucial pull-up jumper with just over two minutes remaining that brought the Pirates within two points at 44-42.
The Dragons’ offense, however, stagnated for long stretches. After their 15-point first quarter, they managed only nine points in both the second and third periods. Hampton capitalized briefly, taking a 34-32 lead late in the third quarter after a 7-0 run capped by an Aaryn Battle pull-up jumper. Battle, from Sewell, New Jersey, facilitated much of Hampton’s offense, dishing out seven assists.
The fourth quarter became a tense exchange of single possessions. Drexel’s Laine McGurk of West Chester, Pennsylvania, led her team with 15 points, but it was a collective effort down the stretch that secured the win. With Drexel clinging to a 48-47 lead after Hampton’s Le’Asia Foreman made one of two free throws with seven seconds left, the Dragons’ Grace O’Neill was fouled and sent to the line. O’Neill, also from West Chester, made both free throws to extend the lead to three with 5.8 seconds on the clock.
The game’s most critical moment followed. Hampton inbounded the ball to Mcelrath, who attempted a game-tying three-pointer from the top of the key. Drexel’s Mariah Watkins, a 6-foot forward from Rochester, New York, rotated and got a piece of the shot, deflecting it as time expired to preserve the Dragon victory.
Beyond the scoring, Drexel’s defense was pivotal. They forced 20 Hampton turnovers, converting them into 20 points, and limited the Pirates to just six points off their own miscues. Key defensive plays, like Watkins’ late block and multiple steals, offset a poor overall shooting night for both teams.
With the win, Drexel improves to 16-8 overall, while Hampton falls to 9-16. The Dragons next travel to face William & Mary on Sunday. Hampton will host Monmouth the same day.
The game’s decisive sequence, culminating in Watkins’ blocked three-point attempt at the buzzer, encapsulated a night where defense ultimately prevailed over offense, allowing Drexel to sweep the season series in dramatically different fashion.
