Florida Women Surge Early, Cruise Past Mississippi State on Road

STARKVILLE, Miss. (Interstat) — Liv McGill scored 30 points and Florida used a dominant first quarter to build an insurmountable lead, cruising to a 71-56 victory over Mississippi State in a Southeastern Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Humphrey Coliseum.

The Gators, who entered as a significant underdog, improved to 16-12 overall and delivered a blow to the Lady Bulldogs’ postseason resume, dropping them to 18-9. Florida’s early offensive explosion and persistent defensive pressure proved too much for a Mississippi State team that struggled with efficiency all evening.

The game’s decisive stretch came immediately after the opening tip. Florida raced out to a 24-14 lead after the first quarter, shooting 10 of 16 from the field while forcing six Mississippi State turnovers. McGill, the dynamic sophomore guard from Minneapolis, set the tone, scoring eight points in the period. Her backcourt partner, Laila Reynolds, added six as the Gators consistently beat the Lady Bulldogs down the floor and attacked the rim.

Mississippi State, which came in favored by 7.5 points according to sportsbooks, never recovered from the initial onslaught. The Lady Bulldogs shot a frigid 1 for 12 from three-point range for the game and managed an offensive rating of just 78.9 points per 100 possessions. They also missed eight of 21 free throw attempts.

Florida, meanwhile, maintained its composure even when its offense cooled. After the hot start, the Gators scored 19 points in the second quarter, 11 in the third, and 17 in the fourth to keep Mississippi State at arm’s length. While the Lady Bulldogs won the rebounding battle 41-31, including a 12-5 edge on the offensive glass, they could not convert those extra chances into enough points to mount a serious threat.

McGill finished with 30 points, seven assists, and three steals in 39 minutes, continuing a stellar stretch of play. Over her last three games, she has averaged 28 points and over seven assists. Reynolds, a freshman from Prince George’s County, Maryland, provided crucial secondary scoring with 19 points, two assists, a block, and two steals. Me’Arah O’Neal added 10 points and four steals for Florida.

Mississippi State was led by Madison Francis, who scored 20 points and blocked three shots. However, she also committed four of her team’s 17 turnovers. Favour Nwaedozi contributed eight points, but the Lady Bulldogs’ backcourt of Trayanna Crisp and Destiney McPhaul combined for just four points on 2-of-10 shooting, though McPhaul did dish out six assists.

The Gators’ defensive activity was a constant disruptor. They recorded 10 steals and forced the 17 turnovers, which they converted into 18 points. Mississippi State’s assist-to-turnover ratio of 7-to-17 underscored an offense that never found its rhythm.

Florida also outperformed Mississippi State at the free-throw line, making 15 of 19 attempts compared to the Lady Bulldogs’ 13 of 21. The Gators shot 46.4% from the field overall, while holding Mississippi State to 37.5%.

The victory gives Florida momentum heading into a critical late-season stretch. The Gators host Alabama on Sunday before welcoming Mississippi next Thursday. Mississippi State, which saw a two-game winning streak snapped, faces a tough road test at Texas on Sunday, followed by a trip to Texas A&M.

An announced crowd of 3,582 at Humphrey Coliseum watched as the Gators controlled the game from start to finish, leading for over 39 minutes and by as many as 18 points. The final score of 127 total points fell well under the sportsbook over/under line of 146.5, largely due to Mississippi State’s offensive struggles.
