Seton Hall Tops Xavier in Big East Women’s Basketball Matchup
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive persistence, the Seton Hall women’s basketball team grinded out a 64-55 victory over Xavier on Wednesday night at Cintas Center, sweeping the season series from the Musketeers.
The Pirates, now 18-8 overall and bolstering their position in the Big East Conference, never trailed but were forced to repeatedly fend off a Xavier team that stayed within striking distance largely through perimeter shooting. Seton Hall improved to 18-8 on the season, while Xavier fell to 11-15.
The most critical phase of the contest arrived in the third quarter. Holding a 35-29 halftime lead, Seton Hall opened the second half with a decisive 11-3 run over the first four minutes. The surge was anchored by a Jordana Codio 3-pointer and a driving layup from Savannah Catalon, pushing the Pirate advantage to 46-32. This cushion proved vital as Xavier’s offense, reliant on the 3-point shot, went cold for long stretches against Seton Hall’s active defense.
Xavier, which connected on 12 of 29 attempts from beyond the arc, struggled immensely inside it and at the free-throw line. The Musketeers made only 9 of 24 two-point attempts and were a stark 1 for 4 from the foul line. In contrast, Seton Hall leveraged its opportunities at the line, making 14 of 19 free throws, and dominated the interior battle with a 10-4 advantage in offensive rebounds leading to 13 second-chance points.
The Pirates’ defensive identity was the story of the night. They forced 18 Xavier turnovers, converting them into 19 points, while committing only 13 turnovers of their own. Seton Hall also tallied 11 steals, with Catalon recording four, which fueled their transition game and disrupted Xavier’s offensive flow. The Musketeers managed just four assists against those 18 giveaways, highlighting the disruptive nature of the Pirate defense.
Catalon, a guard from Mansfield, Texas, orchestrated the Seton Hall offense with a team-high 16 points and five assists in 38 minutes, consistently breaking down the Xavier defense. Codio, a forward from Winter Garden, Florida, provided the scoring punch with a game-high 22 points on efficient 10-of-17 shooting from the field. Mariana Valenzuela added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Pirates.
Xavier was led by Cincinnati native MacKenzie Givens, who scored 19 points. Meri Kanerva of Espoo, Finland, facilitated the offense with eight assists, and Mariyah Noel contributed 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. However, the Musketeers could not overcome their inefficiency on possessions, scoring just 55 points on 69 trips, an offensive rating of 79.8.
Seton Hall built an early 18-13 lead after the first quarter and extended it to nine points by halftime. Each time Xavier threatened, cutting the deficit to single digits, the Pirates responded with a key basket or a defensive stop. A late third-quarter 3-pointer from Xavier’s Petra Oborilova brought the Musketeers within 43-40, but Seton Hall scored the final five points of the period to regain an eight-point edge entering the fourth.
In the final quarter, Xavier closed to within 52-48 on a Vivien Nejašmić 3-pointer with just over seven minutes remaining, but would get no closer. Seton Hall clamped down, holding the Musketeers to just two field goals over the next six minutes, sealing the road victory.
A crowd of 1,249 watched as Seton Hall executed its game plan effectively, overcoming a night where it shot just 4 of 22 from 3-point range by dominating the paint, the glass and the turnover battle. The win gives Seton Hall momentum heading into a key home matchup against St. John’s on Sunday. Xavier will look to regroup on the road at DePaul, also on Sunday.
