North Texas Women Dominate UAB in American Athletic Conference Matchup

DENTON, Texas (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming efficiency and defensive pressure, the North Texas women’s basketball team delivered a commanding 84-54 victory over UAB on Tuesday night at the North Texas Coliseum, completing a regular-season sweep of their American Athletic Conference foe.

The game was effectively decided by halftime, as the Mean Green methodically built a double-digit lead and never relented. North Texas led 21-19 after a competitive first quarter but seized total control in the second, outscoring the Blazers 21-11 to take a 42-30 advantage into the break. The Mean Green’s consistency was stark, scoring at least 19 points in every quarter while holding UAB to 13 or fewer in three of the four periods.

The most important part of the game was North Texas’s ability to capitalize relentlessly on UAB’s mistakes while dominating the interior. The Blazers committed 18 turnovers, which the Mean Green converted into 17 points. Conversely, North Texas gave the ball away only six times, leading to a mere two points for UAB. This 15-point disparity in points off turnovers was the central pillar of the lopsided result. Compounding UAB’s issues was North Texas’s dominance on the offensive glass, where they secured 16 rebounds leading to numerous second-chance opportunities and a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint.

Aysia Proctor led all scorers with 22 points for North Texas, showcasing a versatile offensive game. Megan Nestor provided a powerful inside presence, adding 16 points and anchoring the rebounding effort. The Mean Green’s balance was on full display as Andi Schissler scored 13 points, while both Jazzy Owens-Barnett and Cherie Spencer contributed 10 points apiece. Spencer also added three assists and was a disruptive force defensively.

UAB, which fell to 10-15 overall, was led by Molly Moffitt’s 15 points. Sofia Munoz scored 12 points, and Eleecia Carter added eight, but the Blazers’ offense never found a rhythm. They shot just 40.4% from the field and a crippling 1 for 4 from the free-throw line. Their offensive rating of 75.1 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of stagnant offense and unforced errors.

North Texas improved to 14-10 with the win and showcased the form that made them a heavy favorite according to pregame projections. The victory was a comprehensive team effort, built on defensive intensity, ball security, and superior rebounding. The Mean Green shot 42.5% from the field and a efficient 15 of 19 from the charity stripe.

The game marked the second meeting between the teams this season, with North Texas also winning the previous matchup 72-59 in Birmingham on Jan. 20. The Mean Green have now won three of their last four games.

UAB will look to regroup quickly as they travel to face Tulsa on Friday. North Texas continues its conference schedule on the road at Charlotte on Saturday.
