Illinois Uses Strong Middle Quarters to Defeat Rutgers in Big Ten Women’s Basketball

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — The Illinois women’s basketball team used a dominant second and third quarter to pull away from Rutgers and secure a 76-56 victory in a Big Ten Conference matchup on Tuesday night at State Farm Center.

A crowd of 4,373 saw the Fighting Illini improve to 18-8 overall and 9-6 in conference play, while the Scarlet Knights fell to 9-16 and 2-13.

The game was decided by a decisive 21-9 Illinois run in the second quarter and a 25-12 surge in the third, turning a tight contest into a comfortable lead. The Scarlet Knights showed fight with a 23-point fourth quarter, but the deficit was too large to overcome.

The most important stretch of the game came early in the second period. With Illinois leading 14-12 after one quarter, the Illini unleashed a 12-2 run over a three-minute span to seize control. The run was fueled by the defensive intensity of Cearah Parchment, who recorded three steals during the burst, converting one into a layup herself and assisting on another by Berry Wallace. That sequence pushed the Illinois lead to 26-14 and forced a Rutgers timeout, and the Scarlet Knights never recovered, trailing by double digits for the remainder of the game.

Parchment, a junior from Whitby, Canada, led all scorers with 20 points, adding four assists and a steal in 32 minutes. Wallace, from Pickerington, Ohio, was equally impactful, contributing 21 points. The duo combined for 41 points on efficient shooting, consistently answering any brief Rutgers momentum.

For the Scarlet Knights, Faith Blackstone of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, provided a spark off the bench with a team-high 13 points. Nene Ndiaye, from Saly, Senegal, added 10 points and four assists. Kennedy Brandt, a native of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, scored all six of her points on two three-pointers in the final minute of play.

Illinois shared the ball effectively, with Destiny Jackson of Chicago dishing out eight assists. The Illini defense forced 20 Rutgers turnovers, converting them into 26 points, while committing only 11 turnovers themselves.

The victory keeps Illinois in the upper tier of the Big Ten standings as the regular season enters its final weeks. Rutgers, mired in a lengthy conference losing skid, continues to search for consistency.

Illinois next travels to face Northwestern on Sunday. Rutgers returns home to host Penn State on Saturday.

The game’s final score surpassed the pregame over/under line of 133.5. Illinois entered the game as a heavy favorite, with statistical models giving them a 97.2 percent probability to win.
