McMiller, Merkle Power Penn State Past Northwestern in Big Ten Matchup

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Interstat) — Kiyomi McMiller scored 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Penn State to an 81-71 victory over Northwestern in a Big Ten women’s basketball game Sunday at Bryce Jordan Center.

The Lady Lions, who led wire-to-wire, improved to 9-17 overall. The Wildcats fell to 8-17.

McMiller, a 5-foot-8 guard from Silver Spring, Maryland, was the catalyst throughout, adding four assists and three steals in 39 minutes. Her backcourt partner, Moriah Murray of Dunmore, Pennsylvania, added 14 points. The interior dominance was provided by 6-6 center Gracie Merkle of Mount Washington, Kentucky, who posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Northwestern was led by Caroline Lau with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. Kat Righeimer scored 18 points off the bench, and Grace Sullivan added 16 points and seven rebounds.

The most critical phase of the game was its opening ten minutes, where Penn State established a commanding lead that Northwestern spent the rest of the afternoon trying to overcome. The Lady Lions raced out to a 22-13 first-quarter advantage, fueled by early transition opportunities and interior scoring. McMiller scored nine points in the period, while Merkle added six, as Penn State shot efficiently and forced six Northwestern turnovers. The Wildcats struggled to find an offensive rhythm, managing only nine points in the second quarter as the deficit grew. Penn State led 36-22 at halftime.

Northwestern mounted a significant challenge in the third quarter, exploding for 27 points. Righeimer caught fire, scoring 11 points in the period, including a trio of three-pointers. A 13-4 Wildcats run, capped by a Lau layup with 35 seconds left in the quarter, cut the Penn State lead to 58-55 heading into the final period.

The comeback attempt faltered in the fourth quarter under the weight of Penn State’s offensive rebounding and McMiller’s steady play. The Lady Lions secured 13 offensive boards for the game, leading to 18 second-chance points and a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint. Every time Northwestern closed the gap, Penn State answered, often with a basket from McMiller or Merkle. A Merkle layup with 59 seconds left pushed the lead to 74-69, and Penn State sealed the game by making seven of eight free throws in the final minute.

Penn State finished the game with an offensive rating of 109.7, scoring 81 points on 74 possessions. Northwestern had an offensive rating of 92.9, scoring 71 on 76 possessions. The Lady Lions shot 46.7% from the field, while the Wildcats shot 37.3%.

An announced crowd of 3,074 watched the game.

Northwestern travels to face Michigan State on Wednesday. Penn State’s next game is at Rutgers on Saturday.
