Highlanders Dominate Second Half, Roll Past Black Bears
NEWARK, N.J. (Interstat) — In a rematch of a lopsided contest from just over a month prior, the NJIT Highlanders flipped the script with a dominant defensive performance, holding the Maine Black Bears to a season-low in points for a 63-42 victory in an America East women’s basketball game Saturday at Fleisher Athletic Center.
Fueled by a decisive 18-2 run bridging the first and second quarters and a formidable rim-protecting presence, NJIT improved to 16-10 overall. Maine, which had won six of its last seven, including an 86-67 win over NJIT on Jan. 10, fell to 14-12.
The game’s defining stretch began with Maine leading 9-6 late in the first quarter. Over the next seven minutes of game time, the Black Bears’ offense completely stalled, managing just a single field goal. Meanwhile, NJIT found its rhythm. Olivia Kulyk ignited the run with a pull-up jumper, and the Highlanders’ defense forced a series of rushed Maine possessions. Back-to-back three-pointers from Marissa Gingrich and Ava Locklear early in the second quarter extended the lead, and Locklear’s layup with 6:10 left in the half capped the surge, giving NJIT a 24-11 advantage from which Maine never recovered.
The Highlanders’ defense was the story, contesting nearly every shot and amassing 10 blocks as a team. Maine struggled profoundly from the field, shooting a frigid 23.1% on 15-of-65 shooting. Their troubles were magnified from beyond the arc, where they hit just 2 of 21 attempts. NJIT, by contrast, was efficient, shooting 42.1% overall and 9 of 23 from three-point range.
Adrianna Smith, the reigning America East Player of the Year, fought through constant defensive attention to lead Maine with 24 points and 15 rebounds. However, she required 27 shot attempts to reach her total, emblematic of her team’s offensive struggles. Ashlyne Woods added eight points for the Black Bears.
NJIT countered with a balanced and efficient offensive attack. Olivia Kulyk, a 6-foot-1 forward from Edinboro, Pennsylvania, led all scorers with 19 points, adding nine rebounds and two blocks. Ava Locklear of Tiffin, Iowa, posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, alongside three blocks and two assists. Her defensive impact was pivotal in containing Maine’s interior efforts.
Guard Allison Cannon of Holmdel, New Jersey, orchestrated the offense with a game-high five assists to go with eight points, four rebounds and two blocks. Marissa Gingrich contributed 10 points and seven rebounds for the Highlanders.
Maine held a narrow early lead, closing the first quarter ahead 12-9. The second quarter proved catastrophic, as NJIT outscored the Black Bears 18-10 to take a 27-22 lead into halftime. Any hopes of a Maine rally were extinguished in the third quarter, where the Highlanders put the game out of reach with a 21-11 period, extending their lead to 48-33 entering the final frame.
The Black Bears won the rebounding battle 46-41, including 11 offensive boards, but could not convert those second chances sufficiently, scoring only 22 points in the paint against NJIT’s swarming defense. Maine committed just seven turnovers but their inability to generate clean looks proved far more damaging.
The announced attendance was 281. Both teams continue America East conference play next week. NJIT travels to face Albany on Thursday. Maine returns home to host New Hampshire on Saturday.
