Shuler’s 31 Points Lead Oregon State Women Past Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — Kennedie Shuler scored 31 points and Oregon State used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from Pacific for a 70-60 victory in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at A.C. Spanos Center.

The Beavers, who had lost three straight, outscored the Tigers 26-11 in the pivotal third period to turn a one-point halftime deficit into a comfortable lead they would not relinquish. Oregon State improved to 18-9 overall, while Pacific fell to 10-15.

After a sluggish first half that saw them trail 33-22 at the break, the Beavers exploded offensively after halftime. Shuler, a 5-foot-10 guard from Gresham, Oregon, was the catalyst, scoring 13 of her game-high total during the third-quarter run. Her driving layup with 6:29 left in the period gave Oregon State its first lead since the opening minutes at 37-35, part of a 15-0 run that flipped the game.

Tiara Bolden added 18 points for Oregon State, and Jenna Villa contributed 13 points and six rebounds. The Beavers shot 47.2% from the field and owned a 36-28 advantage in points in the paint, overcoming 14 turnovers.

Pacific was led by Daria Nestorov’s 19 points. Sydney Ward had 11 points and six rebounds, and Winner Bartholomew finished with 11 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers. Pacific shot 41.4% from the floor but managed just three made 3-pointers on 12 attempts and was hampered by 11 turnovers.

The first half was a struggle for both teams, defined by defense and missed opportunities. Oregon State started quickly, building a 15-8 lead midway through the first quarter behind early baskets from Shuler and Bolden. Pacific responded with a 10-2 run to end the period, taking an 18-15 lead on a Stella Szabo layup just before the buzzer.

The Tigers extended their lead in the second quarter, holding Oregon State to just seven points on 2-of-13 shooting. The Beavers went scoreless for over five minutes, and Pacific took a 33-22 advantage into the locker room after a Sydney Ward layup in the final seconds. The 22 first-half points were a season low for Oregon State.

The game’s complexion changed entirely after halftime. Oregon State opened the third quarter with renewed energy, attacking the basket and tightening its defense. A 3-pointer by Bolden at the 5:53 mark capped the 15-0 run and put the Beavers ahead 42-35. Oregon State’s defense held Pacific without a field goal for nearly six minutes during the stretch.

Pacific closed the gap to 44-41 on a Daria Nestorov 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer, but Oregon State answered immediately to start the fourth. Jenna Villa hit a 3-pointer on the first possession of the final period, sparking a 7-2 spurt that pushed the lead back to eight points. The Tigers never got closer than six points the rest of the way, as Shuler consistently answered any Pacific basket with one of her own, scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Oregon State’s interior presence was also key, with Lara Alonso-Basurto Cumplido grabbing seven rebounds and Lizzy Williamson adding seven rebounds and a block in just 12 minutes. The Beavers outrebounded Pacific 38-33 and held a 10-8 edge in offensive boards.

Pacific’s backcourt of Nestorov and Ward combined for 30 points, but the Tigers’ offense stalled in the second half, shooting just 37% after the break. They also converted only eight points off of Oregon State’s 14 turnovers.

The game was played before an announced crowd of 532.

Oregon State next hosts Portland on Thursday. Pacific is scheduled to host San Francisco on Thursday.
