Towson Women Cruise Past Hampton in Road Victory
HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — The Towson Tigers seized control from the opening tip and never relented, cruising to a decisive 69-44 victory over the Hampton Pirates in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday night at the Convocation Center.
The most important part of the game was its inception, as Towson established immediate and overwhelming dominance in the first quarter, setting a tone from which Hampton never recovered. The Tigers opened the contest with a blistering 16-2 run, effectively deciding the outcome within the game’s first five minutes. Masyn Marchbanks set the pace, hitting a 3-pointer on the game’s first possession off an assist from Hannah Dereje, who won the opening jump ball. Thalia Shepard followed with a layup, and Marchbanks struck again from beyond the arc less than three minutes in. Hampton, meanwhile, was stifled by the Towson defense, committing a shot-clock violation and missing its first five field goal attempts before Aisha Dabo’s jumper at the 7:21 mark finally got the Pirates on the board. By the end of the period, Towson led 16-9, having built a cushion that only expanded as the game progressed.
Towson’s offensive execution was balanced and persistent across all four quarters. The Tigers scored 17 points in the second quarter, 17 in the third, and closed with 19 in the fourth. Defensively, they smothered Hampton, limiting the Pirates to just seven points in the second quarter. The Tigers’ 26 points in the paint and consistent perimeter threats proved too much for Hampton to counter.
India Johnston led all scorers with 19 points for Towson, adding two assists and two steals. Masyn Marchbanks provided crucial early offense, finishing with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, along with a block and a steal. Thalia Shepard contributed nine points and two assists, while Zoli Khalil added eight points. For Hampton, Kayla Lezama and Kiarra Mcelrath shouldered the scoring load, each finishing with 17 points. Lezama added a steal, and Mcelrath contributed three steals, but the Pirates struggled to find consistent offense elsewhere, shooting poorly from the floor throughout.
The victory improved Towson’s season record to 14-10, while Hampton fell to 9-15. An announced crowd of 181 watched as the Tigers methodically dispatched the Pirates, leading by as many as 25 points. The win followed a pattern for Towson, which has now won two straight after a narrow loss to William & Mary on Feb. 6. Hampton has lost three consecutive games.
Towson’s defensive pressure was a constant, generating nine points off turnovers, matching Hampton’s output in that category, but the Tigers’ ability to convert their own opportunities at a higher rate was the difference. The Pirates could not string together enough stops or scores to mount a serious challenge after the disastrous start.
Looking ahead, Towson travels to face William & Mary on Sunday, Feb. 15, seeking to avenge its earlier one-point loss to the Tribe. Hampton will have a longer break before hosting Drexel on Friday, Feb. 20. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Towson entered the contest with a 75.30 percent probability to win, a projection the Tigers fulfilled with a wire-to-wire performance defined by their commanding opening salvo.
