Navy Routs Bucknell in Patriot League Women’s Basketball

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Interstat) — The Navy women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance and capitalized on a staggering number of Bucknell miscues to secure a 66-43 victory in a Patriot League contest Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.

The Midshipmen, improving to 17-6 overall and solidifying their position near the top of the conference, turned 18 Bucknell turnovers into 21 points, while the Bison managed only three points off Navy’s 11 giveaways. That 18-point disparity proved to be the decisive factor in a game where both teams struggled from the field.

Navy set the tone from the opening tip, which was won by Morgan Demos. She immediately converted a layup on the game’s first possession, sparking a 20-2 first-quarter run that effectively decided the contest. Bucknell’s offensive woes were severe early, managing just a single field goal in the opening period on a Tuana Coskun layup with nine seconds remaining. The Bison shot 1-for-14 in the quarter and committed seven turnovers, which Navy relentlessly converted into transition opportunities.

The Midshipmen led 20-2 after one quarter and 32-11 at halftime. Bucknell never recovered from that initial deficit, unable to cut the Navy lead below 17 points at any stage in the second half. While the Bison showed slightly more offensive rhythm after the break, scoring 17 points in the third quarter, Navy answered each mini-run to maintain a commanding advantage.

Zoe Mesuch led all scorers with 17 points for Navy, including three 3-pointers, in 28 minutes of action. Julianna Almeida added 10 points, and Zanai Barnett-Gay chipped in 11. The Midshipmen’s defense was anchored by Demos, who blocked three shots and altered several others in just 16 minutes, and Kate Samson, who added two blocks.

For Bucknell, now 8-15, Mariah Hardy was the lone bright spot offensively, finishing with 14 points and battling for multiple offensive rebounds. Coskun added 10 points and blocked three shots. The Bison shot just 30.9% from the field (17 of 55) and 20% from 3-point range (3 of 15). Their offensive rating of 61.2 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of profound struggle against Navy’s active, swarming defense.

The most important sequence of the game was undoubtedly the opening quarter. Navy’s immediate defensive pressure caused chaos for Bucknell’s ball-handlers. The Bison’s first six possessions resulted in three missed shots and three turnovers. Meanwhile, Navy scored on its first four trips down the floor, with Demos’ layup, an Almeida layup, a Samson layup, and finally a Zoe Mesuch 3-pointer, assisted by Maren Louridas, pushing the lead to 11-0 and forcing a Bucknell timeout just over five minutes into the game. The run continued unabated, reaching 20-0 before Coskun’s late layup finally stopped the bleeding. That initial burst, fueled entirely by defensive stops and opportunistic scoring, rendered the final three quarters a formality.

Navy also held a significant advantage at the free-throw line, making 14 of 18 attempts compared to Bucknell’s 6 of 9. The Midshipmen also outscored the Bison 36-24 in the paint and won the battle on the glass, particularly on the defensive end, limiting Bucknell to few second-chance opportunities despite seven offensive rebounds.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Navy over Bucknell, having previously won 77-51 in Lewisburg on Jan. 7. It also continued a stark contrast in season trajectories; Navy has now won five of its last six games, while Bucknell has lost two of three following a brief two-game win streak.

Navy will look to continue its push for Patriot League positioning when it hosts Colgate on Saturday. Bucknell aims to regroup at home against Boston University, also on Saturday.
