Hofstra Tops Hampton in Women’s Basketball
STEWART MANOR, N.Y. (Interstat) — Chloe Sterling delivered a near triple-double, and the Hofstra Pride used a dominant first half to set the tone in a 75-59 victory over the Hampton Pirates in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at Mack Sports Complex.
Sterling, a 5-foot-7 guard from Kennesaw, Georgia, filled the stat sheet with 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in 36 minutes, orchestrating the Pride’s offense and helping them build a commanding lead that Hampton never seriously threatened. The performance marked a return to form for Sterling, who had been held to single-digit scoring in two of her last three outings.
The most critical phase of the game was the opening quarter, where Hofstra established immediate control. The Pride raced out to a 22-14 lead after the first 10 minutes, capitalizing on early Hampton turnovers and inefficient offense. Hofstra’s pressure and activity created second chances, grabbing four offensive rebounds in the period to Hampton’s zero, and held the Pirates to just 14 points on a series of contested shots.
Hofstra extended its lead to 42-25 by halftime, showcasing superior ball movement and shot-making. The Pride shot 50% from the field in the first half while holding Hampton to a 32% clip. The Pirates also struggled mightily from the free-throw line before the break, making only 5 of 13 attempts, squandering opportunities to keep pace.
Hampton showed life in the third quarter, outscoring Hofstra 20-13 behind an aggressive push from Kayla Lezama and Taylor Gibson. A 9-2 run by the Pirates, capped by a Gibson three-pointer assisted by Olivia Smith, cut the deficit to 55-45 with 1:57 left in the period. Hampton’s defense forced several Hofstra turnovers during the stretch, offering a glimpse of a potential comeback.
However, the Pride quickly snuffed out any lingering doubt at the start of the fourth quarter. Nevaeh Brown, who finished with 17 points and six rebounds, hit consecutive jumpers, and Emma Von Essen connected on a crucial three-pointer off a Sterling assist to push the lead back to 65-49 with 7:01 remaining. Hampton never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
The statistical disparity told the story of Hofstra’s comprehensive win. The Pride dominated the glass, securing 14 offensive rebounds leading to 16 second-chance points, compared to just four offensive boards for Hampton. Hofstra also shared the ball effectively, registering 18 assists on 27 made field goals, while Hampton managed only three assists total. The Pirates’ offensive rating of 86.9 points per 100 possessions underscored their struggles against a active Hofstra defense.
Lezama led Hampton with 17 points, and Gibson provided a spark off the bench with 14 points and six rebounds. Kiya Dorroh contributed six points and four assists for the Pirates.
Hofstra had strong supplementary performances beyond Sterling and Brown. Micaela Carter scored 15 points, and Von Essen added 14, including four three-pointers, providing consistent perimeter scoring.
With the win, Hofstra improved its season record to 4-18, while Hampton fell to 9-14. The Pride next travel to face Campbell on Friday. Hampton returns home to host Towson on Friday.
The game was played in front of an announced attendance of 387.
