Xavier at Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Two Big East women’s basketball teams looking to halt slides will meet Sunday when the Providence Friars host the Xavier Musketeers at Dunkin’ Center.
The matchup features teams with nearly identical struggles. Xavier (11-12 overall) enters having lost five of its last six games, while Providence (10-14) has dropped six of its last seven. Both are coming off double-digit road losses on Feb. 4, with Xavier falling 71-52 at Saint John’s and Providence losing 78-61 at Marquette.
The Musketeers will lean on guard Savannah White, who has been a consistent contributor. She scored 11 points with three assists in the loss to Saint John’s and nearly posted a triple-double with seven points, eight rebounds and three assists in a 63-59 win over Butler on Feb. 1. Forward Mariyah Noel, who had a team-high 20 points against the Red Storm, provides a secondary scoring threat.
Providence’s hopes rest heavily on the hot hand of Teneisia Brown. The guard erupted for a season-high 24 points in the loss at Marquette, showcasing her scoring potential. She has averaged 12.4 points over her last five contests. Support from players like Orlagh Gormley, who had six points and four assists against Marquette, will be crucial.
History favors Xavier. In the teams’ first meeting this season on Dec. 4, the Musketeers defeated the Friars 61-47 in Cincinnati.
The game is pivotal for both teams’ aspirations in the final stretch of the conference schedule. A win could provide momentum before challenging upcoming slates; Xavier hosts Villanova next, while Providence faces Butler before a difficult road trip to Georgetown and Connecticut.
Tip-off is set for Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026, in Providence.
