Gonzaga Women Dominate Pacific in Wire-to-Wire Victory

SPOKANE, Wash. (Interstat) — The Gonzaga Bulldogs used a dominant defensive performance and a commanding second-quarter surge to overwhelm the Pacific Tigers 72-44 in a West Coast Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at a sold-out McCarthey Athletic Center.

A crowd of 6,000 watched the Bulldogs improve to 18-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play, while the Tigers fell to 9-14 and 2-8.

The most critical stretch of the game arrived in the second quarter, where Gonzaga transformed a competitive contest into a lopsided affair. Leading 16-10 after the first period, the Bulldogs unleashed a 21-8 run in the second quarter. The defensive intensity was the catalyst, as Gonzaga forced seven Pacific turnovers in the frame, converting them into 12 points. The Tigers, meanwhile, managed just eight points on 3-of-13 shooting in the quarter, their offensive struggles epitomized by a stretch of more than five minutes without a field goal.

That defensive stranglehold continued after halftime, with Gonzaga holding Pacific to 13 points in both the third and fourth quarters. For the game, the Bulldogs forced 17 turnovers while committing only eight, leading to a 12-8 advantage in points off turnovers. Gonzaga also controlled the glass with a 17-7 edge in offensive rebounds, fueling a decisive 46-22 margin in points in the paint.

Pacific’s offensive woes were comprehensive. The Tigers shot just 29.8 percent from the floor and a frigid 17.4 percent from 3-point range. Their offensive rating of 61.7 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of stagnant offense, managing only two assists against 17 turnovers.

Gonzaga’s offense, while not spectacular, was efficient and balanced, posting a 97.8 offensive rating. The Bulldogs shot 38.7 percent from the field but consistently generated high-percentage looks inside.

Jaiden Haile, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Fargo, North Dakota, led Gonzaga with 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double in just 21 minutes. Lauren Whittaker, a 6-3 freshman from Christchurch, New Zealand, provided a major spark off the bench with 15 points and seven rebounds. Guard Allie Turner added 12 points.

Pacific was led by Sydney Ward, who scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots. Winner Bartholomew added 12 points and four rebounds.

Gonzaga set the tone early, opening a 10-4 lead in the first quarter behind quick scores from Whittaker and Turner. Pacific stayed within six after one period, but the Bulldogs’ second-quarter blitz erased any doubt. The lead ballooned to 37-18 by halftime and never dipped below 17 in the second half, extending as high as 30 points.

The Bulldogs have now won three straight conference games. Pacific has lost two of its last three.

Gonzaga next travels to face San Diego on Thursday. Pacific will visit Saint Mary’s on the same night. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Stockton, California, on Feb. 21.
