Vanderbilt at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Interstat) — A top-tier Southeastern Conference women’s basketball clash is set for Thursday night when the Vanderbilt Commodores visit the Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena.

Vanderbilt (21-2, 8-2 SEC) enters with one of the nation’s premier records but is looking to rebound from its first conference road loss last Friday at Mississippi. The Commodores responded with an 82-66 home win over Florida on Sunday, powered by a stellar 30-point, eight-assist performance from star guard Mikayla Blakes.

Blakes has been phenomenal, averaging 26.1 points over her last eight games, including a 38-point outburst at Mississippi State. Her backcourt leadership will be critical against Kentucky’s pressure.

The Wildcats (18-5, 6-4), coming off a dominant 93-73 road win at Arkansas, present a formidable challenge, particularly in the paint. Center Clara Strack dominated the Razorbacks with 33 points and 15 rebounds, showcasing her ability to take over a game. Her matchup with Vanderbilt’s Sacha Washington, who had 14 points and six rebounds against Florida, will be a key interior battle.

Kentucky has struggled with consistency in SEC play, alternating wins and losses in its last six contests. A home victory against a highly-ranked Vanderbilt team would provide a significant resume boost.

Vanderbilt boasts a potent offense, having scored 80 or more points in nine games this season. Kentucky’s defense, which allows an average of 66.2 points, will be tested. The Wildcats will need another major contribution from Strack and support from forwards Amelia Hassett and Teonni Key to counter Vanderbilt’s balanced attack.

This is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams; they will meet again in Nashville on Feb. 22.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
