New Mexico Holds Off Wyoming Rally for Road Win

BOSLER, Wyo. (Interstat) — In a rugged Mountain West Conference clash defined more by defensive grit than offensive artistry, the New Mexico Lobos grinded out a 58-51 victory over the Wyoming Cowgirls on Wednesday night at Arena-Auditorium.

The game, witnessed by 1,953 fans, was a testament to perseverance as both teams struggled to find a consistent scoring rhythm. New Mexico improved to 16-7 overall, while Wyoming fell to 8-14.

The most critical phase of the contest arrived in the second quarter, where New Mexico constructed the decisive cushion it would rely upon for the remainder of the night. Leading by just two points after a tightly contested first quarter, the Lobos clamped down defensively, holding Wyoming to a mere eight points in the period. This defensive stand allowed New Mexico to methodically build a 29-19 halftime advantage, a 10-point lead that proved insurmountable for the offensively challenged Cowgirls.

Wyoming’s struggles were encapsulated in its offensive rating of 85.2, managing just 51 points on 60 possessions. New Mexico was only marginally more efficient with a 96.1 rating, but its ability to create extra opportunities made the difference. The Lobos dominated the offensive glass, securing eight offensive rebounds to Wyoming’s three, leading to crucial second-chance points and helping offset their own 10 turnovers.

The third quarter saw Wyoming attempt to rally, cutting the deficit to six points on several occasions behind the efforts of Malene Pedersen. The sophomore guard from Aabyhoej, Denmark, led all scorers with 17 points, tirelessly working to ignite her team. However, each time the Cowgirls threatened, New Mexico had an answer, often from guard Nayli Padilla. Padilla provided a vital spark off the bench, scoring 13 points, including two critical third-quarter three-pointers that stifled Wyoming momentum and helped New Mexico maintain a 46-33 lead entering the final period.

Wyoming mounted its most serious challenge in the fourth quarter, unleashing an 18-point outburst. A three-pointer from Peyton Wohlford, who scored all nine of her points in the second half, and another from Pedersen fueled a run that brought the Cowgirls within seven points in the final minutes. But the Lobos, who had seen a late lead slip away in previous contests this season, displayed improved poise. Key baskets from Laila Abdurraqib, who finished with 12 points, and a clutch three-pointer from Padilla with 1:21 remaining effectively sealed the outcome, pushing the lead back to 10 and extinguishing Wyoming’s last hope.

Beyond Padilla and Abdurraqib, New Mexico’s scoring was balanced. Destinee Hooks added 11 points, while Cacia Antonio contributed nine points and two assists. The Lobos shot 41.8 percent from the field but were hampered by 28.6 percent shooting from three-point range.

For Wyoming, Pedersen’s 17 points were supplemented by eight points and two assists from Aurore Eyango of Lille, France, and nine points from Henna Sandvik of Helsinki, Finland. The Cowgirls shot 42.6 percent overall but were undone by 13 turnovers and their inability to contain New Mexico’s offensive rebounding.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for New Mexico, which defeated Wyoming 62-48 in Albuquerque on Dec. 31. According to Interstat’s ELO system, New Mexico entered the game with a 57.70 percent probability to win.

New Mexico next travels to face Boise State on Saturday. Wyoming will head to Colorado State, also on Saturday.
