Grand Canyon Rallies Past San Diego State in Women’s Basketball

PHOENIX (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune, the Grand Canyon Antelopes erupted for 24 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a sluggish offensive performance and defeat the San Diego State Aztecs 57-44 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Wednesday night at Grand Canyon University Arena.

The victory, witnessed by 643 fans, avenged a loss to the Aztecs just four weeks prior and snapped San Diego State’s five-game winning streak. The Antelopes improved to 9-14 overall, while the Aztecs, who entered the contest with a 17-3 record, fell to 17-4.

For three quarters, the game was a defensive struggle defined by missed shots and turnovers. San Diego State led 20-19 at halftime and maintained a narrow 33-31 advantage entering the final period. The Aztecs’ defense had largely contained Grand Canyon, holding them to just 33 points through 30 minutes.

The decisive fourth-quarter surge, however, transformed the contest. Grand Canyon’s offense, which had sputtered to a 22-for-53 shooting night overall, suddenly found its rhythm. The Antelopes opened the period on a 14-2 run, turning a two-point deficit into a 45-35 lead with just over five minutes remaining. San Diego State, conversely, could not respond, managing only 11 points in the quarter on 3-of-12 shooting from the floor.

The most important part of the game was Grand Canyon’s relentless defensive pressure and its direct translation into offense during the final frame. The Antelopes forced 19 San Diego State turnovers and converted them into 22 crucial points, a stark contrast to the Aztecs’ mere 5 points off turnovers. This defensive intensity peaked in the fourth quarter, where Grand Canyon’s steals and deflections fueled their transition game and broke the game open.

Chloe Mann, a 5-foot-8 guard from Fort Worth, Texas, led all scorers with 18 points for Grand Canyon, including a critical 3-pointer during the early stages of the fourth-quarter run. She also contributed a steal and a block. Julianna LaMendola of Coppell, Texas, added 12 points and 7 rebounds, while Ines Zounia of Lille, France, came alive late, scoring 9 of her 11 points in the fourth quarter, all from inside the paint. Anisa Jeffries of Zacatecas, Mexico, facilitated the offense with 4 assists and anchored the defense with a block and 3 steals.

San Diego State was led by Naomi Panganiban’s 15 points, but she was hampered by 6 turnovers. The Aztecs as a team struggled mightily from the field, shooting just 30.4 percent on 14-of-46 shooting. Their offensive rating of 64.2 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of profound offensive frustration. Kennedy Lee of Louisville, Kentucky, added 7 points.

Statistical disparities told the story of Grand Canyon’s winning formula. Beyond the points-off-turnovers margin, the Antelopes dominated inside with 32 points in the paint to San Diego State’s 24 and won the battle on the offensive glass, 9-5. Grand Canyon also tallied 9 steals and 5 blocks, disrupting the Aztecs’ offensive flow throughout.

The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat’s ELO system, which gave San Diego State a 63.5 percent probability of winning. Instead, Grand Canyon authored a comeback defined by defensive grit and a timely offensive explosion, securing a significant conference victory.

San Diego State will look to rebound on the road at San Jose State on Saturday. Grand Canyon travels to face Air Force, also on Saturday.
