Vanderbilt Routs Florida Behind Dominant Second Half

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A dominant third-quarter surge propelled by Mikayla Blakes’ all-around brilliance carried the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team to an 82-66 victory over Florida in a Southeastern Conference game Sunday at Memorial Gymnasium.

Blakes, a 5-foot-8 guard from Somerset, New Jersey, scored 30 points and dished out eight assists, orchestrating a game-changing 32-12 period that turned a competitive contest into a comfortable win for the Commodores before a crowd of 9,268.

The game was tightly contested for a half. Florida, led by the interior presence of Me’Arah O’Neal and the playmaking of Liv McGill, built a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and maintained a 34-25 advantage at halftime. The Gators’ defense was disruptive early, forcing nine Vanderbilt turnovers and blocking four shots in the opening 20 minutes.

Everything shifted decisively after the break. Vanderbilt emerged from the locker room with intensified defensive pressure, converting Florida’s mistakes into easy scoring opportunities. The Commodores forced eight turnovers in the third quarter alone, scoring 33 points off 23 Florida turnovers for the game.

Blakes was at the heart of the onslaught. She scored 13 points in the quarter, including a personal 7-0 run that featured a driving layup, a steal leading to a transition basket and a trio of free throws. Her playmaking unlocked teammates, as Vanderbilt shot 11 of 19 from the field in the period and connected on four three-pointers.

The Commodores opened the second half on a 19-4 run to seize a 44-38 lead and never looked back. By the time the quarter ended with a Aubrey Galvan three-pointer at the buzzer, Vanderbilt had outscored Florida 32-12 and held a 57-46 lead, effectively deciding the contest.

Florida, which fell to 13-11 overall, could not mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. Vanderbilt’s lead ballooned to as many as 19 points as the Commodores improved to 21-2.

O’Neal, a 6-foot-4 forward from Houston, Texas, was a force for the Gators, finishing with 22 points and eight rebounds. McGill, a guard from Minneapolis, Minnesota, added 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two blocks. However, Florida’s 23 turnovers and Vanderbilt’s 12 steals proved too much to overcome.

Vanderbilt showcased balanced scoring beyond Blakes. Sacha Washington contributed 14 points and six rebounds, while Justine Pissott added 14 points, including four three-pointers. Aga Makurat chipped in nine points off the bench. The Commodores shot 50.8% from the field and made 11 three-pointers.

Florida shot a respectable 49.1% overall but attempted 11 fewer shots than Vanderbilt, a direct result of the turnover disparity. The Gators also struggled at the free-throw line, making just 6 of 11 attempts.

The victory keeps Vanderbilt near the top of the SEC standings as it prepares for a road test at Kentucky on Thursday. Florida, seeking to stabilize its season, will host Auburn on Thursday.
