North Carolina A&T at Hampton
HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — A tight Big South Conference women’s basketball race will see Hampton and North Carolina A&T renew their rivalry Sunday at the Convocation Center, just two weeks after their first meeting.
The Pirates (8-11) will host the Aggies (7-12) in a rematch of North Carolina A&T’s 70-57 home victory on Jan. 18. Both teams enter on losing streaks, with Hampton dropping its last three games and the Aggies coming off a last-second 59-57 home loss to Towson on Friday.
The matchup features two of the league’s top individual performers. North Carolina A&T will lean on forward Chaniya Clark, who dominated the first meeting with 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Clark is averaging 17 points over her last four games, including a 21-point effort at Elon on Jan. 23.
Hampton’s offense runs through guard Kayla Lezama, who scored 17 points in the loss at A&T. She is a consistent scoring threat, having posted 23 or more points in three of her last six contests, highlighted by a 29-point, four-rebound, four-assist performance against College of Charleston on Jan. 11.
Both teams have struggled for consistency in conference play. Since the calendar turned to January, the Aggies are 3-5, with their wins coming against Hampton, Northeastern in double-overtime, and non-conference foe Newberry. The Pirates are 2-6 over the same stretch, with victories over William & Mary and Stony Brook.
Sunday’s contest is the only scheduled meeting between the programs at Hampton this season. The Aggies will look to sweep the season series, while the Pirates aim to defend their home court and level the score.
Following this game, Hampton begins a two-game road trip at Drexel on Feb. 6. North Carolina A&T returns home to host Elon on Feb. 6.
